I'm going to be receiving a VLTOR cluster rail taken from an M1A Socom (the one that stops at the front of the receiver) and though it's ideal for a scout scope setup I'm looking at a more "traditional" scope setup. I know the most ideal/rock solid are the Sadlak/SEI steel series of scope mounts that fit into the stripper clip guide, but I saw a product at One Shot Tactical for a good price and thought I might try this.
It's a Vortex cantilever extended eye relief mount. I know it's been done but I want to get opinions on this. It's meant to forward mount a scope on an AR/M4 platform but it can easily just be turned around to bring a telescopic sight over the M14's receiver. My concern is having similar issues with the ARMS 18 mount in that there won't be enough clearance for ejected spent casings. It certainly doesn't look like it'll sit as low as an ARMS mount.

Links? Pictures? Anything?

Found this with a google search.

Seems to me that unless you are putting a short scope in it you run the risk of having the brass hit the scope rather than the mount. That offset may just take you over the receiver and leave your scope hanging out over the chamber. I'd do some careful measuring.

I guess I'm wondering how this is superior to the designed M-14 mounts unless it's just a desire to use the forward rail that you have.

Thanks for putting in the link, oops. I'm not seeing it as necessarily superior to the more traditional mounts; stripper clip guide. What I like about a cantilever system is A) I'm using my existing rail cluster (ie saving on weight by not adding an additional piece of kit), B) quick release in that I can use my iron sights, whereas not all mounts that go into the stripper clip guide do you have that option, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not concerned about the brass hitting the scope as it doesn't seem like it would be a big difference from where the scope would sit in a traditional mount. I also like the fact that it would be a cheaper alternative, not just for the mount but you also don't need rings. To be clear I'm not trying to be cheap and do believe in "buy the best first" but I like to weight options when $ is on the line, especially alot of non-refundable $. As far as scopes go I was planning on something in the Bushnell Elite range, 4200 series. Darren, thanks for the pic.

Except that in a traditional mount the mount itself screens the scope from brass.

It'll be interesting to see if you decide to go that way. Please post pics when you are done.

Got a LaRue SPR-E model and fliped it around and it seems 400+ rounds still going strong. Also no rounds hit the scope when the rifle is in the upright postion.
Here is a pic;

Also ADM sells 1 like the Vortex on Brownells for $150 USD.
Farmboy are we going to see a price correction soon to reflect the strong Canadian dollar? Cuz it's $189.99 USD on the Vortex American website and $289.00 CAD on the Vortex Canadian website. I don't expect them to be the same amount but $100 differance I figured I would have to ask.

Joey's got everything, it seems. I sometimes get jealous fits. :)

Good to know you don't have brass issues with that setup.

From the picture is seems like the scope is canted downwards towards the back of the rifle. Is that an optical illusion from the pic? I guess it would have to be or it wouldn't work well, but just looks odd in the picture.

I have them for $209.99 and $219.99 ;)

The dollar does help, and we've dropped pricing on the product lines we deal with directly.

Vortex is one that we get through a distributor though, so we can only do so much with the price.

Optical illusion. Cell phone picture taken in 1 hand while holding the rifle in the other.
