Does anybody have plans/know-how to make a simple captive bolt gun? For sheep/goat/smaller pig sized animals? I'm rural but 'in town' so no .22.

Being 'in town' means no firearm at all. You'd best look into the legalities of slaughtering anything where you are period.

For sheep and goats you only need a steel rod or hammer as their heads are pretty soft. That's about all they use in England to kill them.To buy a blitz gun is expensive and they are louder then a 22. I use one all the time. Now you can use a common nail gun also. Works well but might be questioned by some people. We used a blitz gun in town at the butcher shop in Acme AB and most other towns we used a 22 in any of the butcher shops and I was in most of them across the province at one time or another.

Ignore sunray's post. As usual he doesn't add anything of substance, just squats, drops and flys away.

A captive bolt stunner is not a firearm, period.

The modified Hilti or Ramset seems like the best option. For obvious reasons you'd want to use the one with the grip frame and trigger instead of the hammer fired "stick" version.... :D

A longer bolt in one of the "low velocity" piston tools aught to work. You'd want to extend the existing piston or get a new one made from a good tool steel which is then correctly heat treated. The new piston/bolt would need to sit up flush with the end of the barrel when pushed back and "set". This should give you a roughly 2.5 inch penetration. Or possibly a little more depending on the model.

Of course it would still use the Ramset or Hilti cartridges. But since it's not a firearm there's nothing wrong with that.

Of course the thing needs to be reloaded between hits. And it'll need serious cleaning I suspect after you're done for the day. But for an occasional use I don't see why this can't serve well.

Gotcha. I was wondering too whether something could be made that was similar to a pen launcher for flares. The nail guns aren't cheap.

I dunno but with all the animal rights people around you may want to consider solid, well built, reliable action and humane over cheap, light weight, easy on me, can be put together with duct tape solution. Weld a 3" long piece of 3/8" steel to a 24oz hammer if you want cheap with no noise. Just hope your swinging arm is up to the task.

Jarvis Canada sells captive bolt stunners many varieties, the pistol shaped ones look cool and will get you noticed if you are using it outside the barn, their is a better version that looks like a skinny croquet mallet ,swing like a hammer and it actuates the shot ,driving the bolt out, it takes 30 seconds to load ,is easy to use and gives you 3 feet of extra reach works on pigs, sheep cows , that 3 feet of extra reach makes it way safer for the operator plus it does not look like a gun always a plus , I used to be a millwright in meat plants and repaired /rebuilt these stunners back in the day , still have a 5 gallon bucket of shots kicking around somewhere

I used the back of the axe for many years on many hogs ,works very well and is quick,,,.once you hit them thy go stiff like a four by four ,,,.and lay still just long enough for you to stick them ,then just wait a few minutes and hang them ,all good ,just like grandpa did ,,we did steers this way as well as sheep and goats ,farm living at its best ,,,,Dutch

Webley "Birmingham England" used to make a captive bolt stunner that was very reasonably priced. They also made a beer can launcher built on the same principal for shotgun target practice both used a 22 crimped blank. A google search might turn something up. D.H.
