Car camping for small game?

Cooking in the vestibule of a nylon tent is a great way to start a fire or attract a bear.

Sometimes the advice on this forum really reflects the 1 week a year spent in the bush

Taking your kids out in the sketchy weather of mid-November is a recipe for souring them on the hunting experience. Contrast that with the summer like weather of mid- September, more young birds on the ground, you can mix in some fishing and roasting weenies over the campfire... start off keeping it light and fun and comfortable and you will have a partner for life.

And it can be an opportunity for pre-season scouting.

Cabelas has an insulated 7'x13' ice fishing tent. They are stand up height. Come with tie downs and anchors and weigh about 54lbs. They are easily set up by one person and even easier with two. There is plenty of room in them to do what you are seeking. A big buddy heater heats them well at sub-zero temps sitting on ice so would work great on bare ground. If you use something like that get a CO monitor, cambodian tire sells them for $35. Great investment. You can pick up interlocking heavy foam matting too for a floor if you want. Its not too expensive and would get you off the dirt so to speak if you don't want to sit around in shoes and boots constantly.

A BIG 10-4 ON THE CO DETECTOR. Last fall we were late setting up our bivouac for moose hunting and didn't get the wood stove burning and so we flashed up a Buddy Heater to keep the chill down. Some time in the night my son heard an alarm on the Buddy Heater that said CO alarm. He shut it down and opened the door and checked everyone was breathing. All was good but so much for heat that night. BE CAREFUL.

Yup the buddy heaters have a sensor thats supposed to trigger and shut them down if the CO levels are too high but I wouldn't trust it to notify me in time. Place those detectors at the level you lie at sleeping too. Plus keep some kind of ventilation flap open too. I keep the vent flaps on the top of the ice tent open while ice fishing and a CO monitor for each of us situated as close to our seated breathing level position as possible.
