Carbine Conversions

Well, this is still quite new to me, but it has my interest now.

As I am a newb, I have a couple of stupid questions I am hoping I won't need my flame suit for.....

1) Are Carbine/Pistol Coversions Legal in Canada ?

2) If Legal, do I get to retain the possible (up to) 10 shot capacity once converted ?

The reason I ask is, a .45ACP based 'Mock-AR15' Conversion sure would make a 'cute' rifle for the wife, who otherwise, can not fire a 45 pistol comfortably for long periods of time.

1)Yes they are legal.

2)Yes, you get to keep the 10 round mag limit. Even with a carbine conversion kit, it it still considered a pistol under Canadian law - a pistol will always be a pistol, according to them.

On top of that, if a rifle can take pistol mags (Beretta CX4 Storm, for example), you can use them in it, since the capacity of the magazine is determined by what it is meant for, not what it is used in.

So, theoretically, this does make for a half decent higher capacity (more than 5 rnds) rifle setup for a smaller framed woman ?

Would custom .45acp heavier loads take much advantage of the longer barrel setup ?

This just seems like a decent step up from a .22lr rifle.

I have two of those Mech Tech carbine conversion units - one in 9mm and the other in 40S&W. Ten round pistol mags are legal to use with the unit. They make a unique sound like you're shooting through a piece of PVC pipe. No you won't be able to reclassify the receiver as non-restricted with the CCU.

I have one CCU from Mechtech as well, in 45ACP. Although I never liked quality of their product there is not much available on the market. So, I had to make it work, and after a bit of modification I got it into comfortable and accurate little shooter.

As to havier loads - I don't know which one will you get, Mechtech seemed to work nice, almost as if it was meant to handle heavier loads. Barrel is beefy and bolt is heavy, spring is stiff. I fired 300gr bullets at whizzlng velocities, would probably take it to a bear hunt if it was non-restricted.
