Okay you black rifle/carbine experts:

Most of you know that I'm also a black rifle lover (truthfully, I prefer OD furniture) and a Service Rifle kinda shooter. My experience with AR's are all with the 20" Hbar configuration, so I need some enlightenment regarding the shorter barrels.

I have seen shooters rock some great scores with the 16" carbine barrel , particularly the Armalite style of 16" midlength version at 500 meters.

Now, here 's the question: Anybody here ever shoot some great Service Rifle Aggregate scores at the 500 m mound using the 14.5" barrel and IVI or SS109 62 gr. bullet?

Last weekend, I shot my wife's setup: Armalite 14.5" flattop with ACOG TA31 Donut reticle at 200m and 300m. Life was great with shzts and giggles all around those distances. Now I'm just wondering how this 14.5" would do at 500 meters. We did not shoot that stage since we shot a CQB match under 100m distances.

Any of you ever done such a thing with your 14.5" at 500 ?

Cheers and regards,
Barney

I shot BCRA a few years ago with a 14.5" Colt

It is doable -- In fact a USMC SSGT shot the record high at the 600m at the PAC Fleet matches in 2002 with a M4A1...

However the 16" does get a better velocity and makes the wind game easier.

Kevin could not have said better,I suggest you use bullet wieghts heavier than 55gr as the lighter bullets tend to deflect more in the wind have shot the last 2 service matches with my M4 Carbine .

Barney,

As you know,, I do ok with the 16" barrel. I haven't tried a 14.5" barrel yet,, because I haven't got one.

I would be keen to give it a try though. Someone would have to lend me theirs though. Anyone willing?

Dave

PS: I recall Greentips averaging in the 540s with his 14.5" setup. He normally hammers the 200 and 300 stages.

I took the 500m deliberate at 500m at Volkes range BCRA about 6 years ago with a 14.5" Colt and ACOG using C77 ball.

In Ottawa where the wind is a little more unforgiving - I have no plans on relinquishing at least 16" -- and IF I get time in 07 I will likley use my 18" Mk12

Hungry, you really fell in love with that 14.5" setup didn't ya :D , but 16" mid-length is likely THE best general purpose setup. Give the 14.5" back to your wife and re-barrel that 20" of yours to 16" mid. (if you do, remember to get the matching ramp style of your upper receiver) :runaway: I know, blackrifles can be frustrating, but so much fun.

Yes, I fell in love with my wife's 14.5" carbine and that's why I'm torn between the 16" and the 14.5" barrels. The 14.5" looks oh-so sweet.

From what I'm reading on this thread, the 14.5" will still deliver the goods at 500m with 62 gr. ammo exiting the barrel at 3000 fps (plus).

I might just get another 14.5" instead of the 16" and it's increased velocity. I just like the looks of the 14.5" M4 profiled barrel. Lots of cool factor. Not to mention that it's lighter than my Armalite 20" Hbar and some of you know I'm always the LAST to leave the range (butts cleanup or March Off) and I'm always carrying my rucksack and bangstick back to the parking lot at Connaught Ranges..... thanks to the silly but understandable policies of Connaught Range Control.

No riding back in a vehicle for this old handicap. I mean physically challenged old fart.

Cheers,
Barney

The most velocity I can get is 2700fps out of a 14.5" tube using compressed loads of 26.5 grns of Varget and ss109's. A 16" tube might be able to go 3000fps or a just tad under. I would also say 16" might be the way to go if you wanna make the 3000fps mark.

Hungry,
Are you up near Minden this weekend re the tactical carbine course?
If so, you may want to try my Colt LE 16" and make a determination.

maxim08: Yes, I'll be up in Minden at Milcun this weekend. I really don't need to try the 16". I'm convinced that maybe I should keep my 20" and just keep shooting it for the Service Rifle matches up to 500metres. And then I'll just keep my wife's 14.5" bbl'ed carbine for the Tac Carbine matches.

Thanks for offering, anyways.

Cheers,
Barney

You know the first year was fine -- the second I mixed 77gr and C77 in the same mag  Matlet hit - V bull - manlet hit - V bull

I have the potential to show my ass at times...
