Gentlemen,
You guys can thank Ted Kennedy for the prices at CMP. Back in the mid-70's I ran DCM shoots. DCM gave you ammo, targets and rifles to shoot the course with. ALL FREE. Then came Mr Kennedy. He wanted the DCM shut down and the Dem's almost got the job done. They didn't get the votes needed to close the DCM BUT they got the funding from the US ARMY cut to ZERO. DCM had to change to stay alive. What they had to do was change into the CMP and had to fund the whole operation. Under the old DCM you could buy only 1 rifle in a lifetime at about 99 bucks. Well, CMP let you buy more then 1 rifle and had to keep raising the price to stay alive. You guys know that prices on almost anything has gone up, so the CMP had to raise their prices. Remember, CMP has done a great job in getting these Rifles into your hands. If you go to gun shows/gunshops you can see the higher prices on both the M1 Carbine/M1 Garand. We now have the problem that the Dem's might take the White House in '08. The 3 best things for us to do is Vote, join the NRA, yes but they are on our side and just might save us in '08, and last but in my opinion BUY AMERICAN from the CMP. They are out there for you guys so let's help support them. Stop all this noise about price increases that is going on everywhere. CMP gets you the real deal.

The CMP is still pretty cheap in its cost of the rifles in my opinion.

Also note Canadians cant buy from the CMP which sucks. :(

Clancy, you really need pay attention to where you're posting. Nobody up here cares what Ted Kennedy or the CMP did or does.

But we should if the US passes a ban the goverment in power here will fallow suit. Because "If the American's did it its the right thing to do" mentality the Anti's will use agisnt us.

He's a fellow GunNutz, even though he's American. While we can't help him directly, we can wish him well instead of coming across as elitist arseholes. As another poster said, what happens in the US generally does have consequences for us here in Canada. As for the CMP...what Canadian shooter wouldn't give his left arm to have a similar program here in Canada? Think about all those Longbranch Lee-Enfields, Stens, FNs that could've found their way into Canadian shooters hands over the years!

You got it Dimitri!!!!

There have been times when the liberals used American crime statisitics as the justification of laws here in Canada.

I am sure though that the anti's in the US are also doing the same thing. Using our laws as a model to promote their own covert agenda to eliminate private firearms ownership.

The only thing the US has going for it is a powerful lobby group and accountability of it's politicians. Our politicians have zero accountability to their constituents...they can smile and lie and get elected, then do whatever the party says, not what the voters want.

"...we should..." There is no Canadian equivalent to the CMP and there never has been. There's nothing for our government to ban or close. Any Canadian military surplus or obsolete firearms are destroyed.
The CMP is a U.S. government corporation that sells surplus firearms(M-1 rifles & carbines and 1903 Springfields mostly.) and ammo to qualified citizens. The first qualification is being a U.S. citizen. The CMP also promotes youth and adult shooting programs.

So it doesn't have a agency to stop here in Canada that really isn't the issue with the CMP, US does a move agisnt the US its a move agisn't surplus firearms when you think about it. How do you think they'll justify it just simply shutting the CMP down ?? No they are going to claim the rifles are "evil" military rifles with a "high power ammunition" and "bayonet mounts" and "semi-automatic" (for the M1) that don't belong in the hands of civilians with the rest of the laws they are going to go to pass if the Democrats get into the government in 2008 in the US.

This threat eventhough its indirect for us is still a threat to Canadian gun owners.
