Hi folks,
what do you think about carbon fiber barrel for the ruger 10/22 rifle?
I'm looking to build the lightest 10/22 for hunting but I want accuracy. So, I looked at Butler creek and VQ barrel in carbon fiber and it seem to be the best choice for accuracy and weight. Maybe some other brand exist? Does the standard Ruger barrel is lightest or not? Also, since it's for hunting, will those chamber hunting ammo?
Does the VQ barrel is really better than the Butler creek? I dont want to do benchrest but I want a rifle that shoot where I aim.

Thanks

I have a Butler Creek carbon fiber, and I FREAK'N love it. My grouse gun. Super light, carry it all day no prob. Drastic improvement in accuracy over the factory barrel. I have had no problems with it whatsoever, I'd get another one without hesitation. I've had this set up since '99. :D I am probably going to get a VQ tension barrel for my next one, but ONLY because I want a 16.5" barrel.

Here's mine. It has a matte finish, explained here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108207

I have heard good things, and bad things about the Butler creek barrels; mostly bad (not knocking Nine's though becuase I am sure it is a tack-driver!)

VQ makes a great Carbon Fiber barrel though :)

Read lots of less than favorable review about B.C. carbon fiber barrels. Their steel barrels get pretty good ones though. Check out rimfire central for more details.

But these barrel are less weight than a std Ruger barrel or not?
The lightweight sporter profile carbon fiber barrels will be lighter then the standard ruger sporter barrel. I would think the bull barrel carbon fiber one would be equal or negligible weight compared to the standard profile ruger barrel.
Check rimfirecentral, all kinds of info on barrels.

I have a Butler Creek carbon fibre bull barrel on a 10/22 and although I haven't weighed it, it certainly seems much lighter than the Ruger OEM barrel.

That's its one saving grace, because I didn't see any significant difference in accuray when I installed it.

another question on CFbarrels - isn't cooling an issue? CF must have lower heat transfer/exchange rate as compared to metal. Right? I mean , what if you are in "target rich" environment - can you do pointshoot-pointshoot-pointshoot and so on? Grouse come in clusters some times. OK, and if there are thermal stresses involved, isn't there any de-lamination between steel and fiber? Thanx beforehand for your comments on this gentlemen.

I've had my carbon fiber barrel for many years, still holding strong. It has rapid heat dissapation, shooting 25 round mag after mag with no ill effect, and just warm to the touch. I'd highly recommend one!

I have only ever bought 3 (2 steel, one carbon bull) butler creek 10/22 barrels. All were very accurate. I was a little hestiant because of the bum rap that they are given online, but I took a chance on the first one, and have not looked back.

As for the BC carbon barrel, It is very accurate, and very light. I find the gun too light for offhand, or in much wind, but it is great to carry, and very accurate off a rest, or from a seated/prone position. If you want really light, get the BC factory contour carbon barrel. Use the sights on the barrel, not a scope. The rifle should float. There is a picture at:

I have the VQ CF barrel. It is lighter than the BC barrel and a lot lighter than the factory barrel, even with a stabilizer on the muzzle. Like all VQ barrels, mine is accurate. BC barrels are hit and miss, about one in four barrels is a good one.

Also, you now can get a VQ barrel for a price which makes getting the VQ over the BC a no brainer, this wasn't the case when I bought my BC.

I guess I'm forced to buy a VQ now for a new 10/22. :D The 16.5" is just H-O-T.

Not to diss anyone’s project...but we have to be careful not to get caught up in the "I just have to have it...." conundrum. What is anyone really going to gain by switching barrels on a 10/22. Especially if you are talking about hunting! Factory accuracy is all you need! A few oz. of weight savings, who cares! lugging around a bull barrel 10/22 should be good practice for lugging a .308 or something like that.

Just my $0.02

I just installed a Tacical Solutions 16.5" barrel on my 10/22 paired with a hogue overmold stock makes the gun extremely light, lighter than factory and the barrel is .920

here are some pics so my original post isn't worthless anymore, the bipod is just for the pictures (stole it from my 700p).

I love, love the look of a 16.5" barrel. :D

My next build will wear a 16.5" VQ barrel. (or maybe one of those tactical solution barrel... I love the color options!)

THIS IS WHAT I NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about the price of the setup:confused:

total cost is around $750, you could lessen that by changing the scope or using a different synthetic stock. the barrel runs about $210 CAD. Good luck with your project
