never seen one like this, assuming it is for a carcano? thought id post pics in the milsurp section, see what i learn. you have to push the button and pull out on the blade a biut to make it fold open

Bayonet for the Carcano M38 Short Rifle. When fitted to the rifle the blade would fold down in a cut in the forearm (similar to an SKS bayonet). The wobbly blade was a poor weapon and was quickly replaced by a standard fixed blade version.
 
Fairly scarce and desireable for collectors of bayonets and Italian militaria. They show up on eBay fairly frequently and can fetch $100+
 
I saw a carcano today at Gobles in London. With the that bayonet on it.
I had never seen one before

I think the one you saw was this:
