carcano rifle

That they are very well made and simple to use.

Are you looking at a milsurp carcano or a commercial sporter ?

Hornady ammo is the best commercial you can use for a Italian carcano as the bullet diameter is proper. Hand loading is also a viable option as well.

Alternatively, I believe the Cooey carcanos are chambered in 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer and commercial ammo is available and works quite well.

M91 Carcano-long infantry rifle?

Excellent rifle, well shaped stock, easy to handle and shoot, sights that take some time to get use to(for some)

Good caliber and design, well used in WW1 and few wars in Africa.Real war horse for Italian Army.

They certainly got respect in the Great War. Fine rifles.

Carcano is a lightweight, fast-handling, accurate rifle firing a true mid-power cartridge and having light recoil.

The rifles are just about bomb-proof, the design and materials are MUCH better than they are given credit for being. Truth is, the Italians put their money into STEEL rather than into making it look pretty.

The entire series (except for the Model 41) has gain-twist rifling, so the barrels should never be chopped.

Barrels last halfway to forever and many of them are honest 1-MOA rifles.

They are also the cheapest classic Milsurp available, apart from the recent influx of Russian '91s.

What's not to like?

Personally, I have seven of them and like them all.

Almost forgot-not all Carcano enbloc clips work well in all rifles.
I found number of them that don't work for me but work for others.

Reloading wise you can easily modify Lee neck sizer for Swedish Mauser to work for Carcano but you don't have to-unmodified it will squeeze about 1/2 of neck length (perfect for me but i'm lazy a bit)

Friend, the Carcano is one of the easiest rifles to load your own ammo for. Cuts the cost better than 50%; you shoot for 60 cents a shot.

Trade-Ex (link at top of this page) has the brass and they have the special Hornady bullets. Everybody makes the dies and they fit almost ALL modern presses.

It is easy on your powder supply. I am loading with a FAST powder, IMR-4198 and I am getting over 200 loads to the pound.

If you want CHEAP shooting, you can load 12 grains of Red Dot shotgun powder with a 170-grain CAST flatbase bullet, plink all day long at a dime a pop.

Bore diameters on Carcanos DO vary somewhat. Original Italian military ammo had a .266 bullet. Hornady makes a .268. Standard 6.5mm bullets are .264; I have a Model 41 here which shoots an INCH at 100 yards, using a flat-based Remington bulk-pack .264. You can't beat that.

Recoil is mild, report is not bad at all. Very docile, very accurate.

They are VERY much underappreciated and underpriced.

Very often you can find a nice one around $250 to $300. I have 1917 Marksman's Rifle which was on its way to the DUMP: shoots to beat the band.

Good luck!
