I am preparing to load 45-70 black powder cartridges for the first time and apparently need a supply of card wads to place between the powder and bullet.
I have seen vague references to making your own from waxed cardboard milk containers and other materials. Can anyone suggest a do-it-myself process for making these wads. Also, will need a source for a (what diameter?) wad punch unless I can make it myself, which is my preference.
Thanks in advance...

Foam for floral arrangements is good too. Just take a .45-70 brass, resize and expand mouth a little bigger than usual, chop off case head/ rim or drill it out to case inside diameter.. Buy Florist foam blocks (dirt cheap-many, many wads in one block), slice to desired thickness, and go cookie cutter style, the finished wads go into the brass, 5 or 6 at a time, then push finished wads out of brass with small piece of doweling.Very quick to do a whole bunch of these.

I use these wih 420 gr. cast + 20.0 SR4759 + win. lr. rifle primer.

With a load like this, lots of room in case, store upright.
