Hey guys,

My father started reloading for one of his old 12 guage doubles (blackpowder) and he was wondering if there is anywhere that sells cardboard shells anymore? If he can't find them, he may go to brass shells. Maybe I should post in the exchange forum looking for old originals.....

Matt, Federal makes some competition shells with paper hulls. You might find an international trap shooter who uses them and will collect them for you.

Failing that, Cheddite manufactures new paper hulls for reloading. I don't know where to get them in Canada, but they supply hulls to Kent ammunition so that might be a place to start. You could always have them shipped from France.

A batch of nice thin walled brass shells would be a better way to go. Sounds like a nice Christmas present for your father!

Thanks for the help guys! I'll look into Brass shells at Bullseye Shooting Supplies, and also see if I can find some trap guys using the others.

Cheers,
Matt

From my experience loading black in paper cases, they will burn through in short order.
One factor to consider is wad availability. Plastic cases are generally intended to use plastic wads - perhaps not the best for black. Metal cases use special oversized wads. Whether your Dad decides to use plastic or metal, appropriate wads will have to be located.

FYI - if he's going to try brass 12g cases, you can get 11g wads from Track of the Wolf. I've only loaded and fired a few, but they worked great.
