I inherited some reloading dies from my father recently. I know Dad had these dies for quite some time and I also know he reloaded a considerable amount of ammunition over the years. Brass was re-sized as required, but Dad never used a tumbler to keep his brass clean. Given the above, do reloading dies get to the point where there are buildups of carbon, gunge, etc.and eventually require cleaning? If so, can the dies be cleaned effectively or would it be better to just start from the beginning and purchase new dies? Thanx in advance.

most dies can be taken apart and cleaned

you can scrub them out with an old bore brush, then a light coat of oil on the threads, and very clean and dry inside though
carbide dies are alot easier to take care of

Rubbbing alcohol is a good cleaner degreaser. White gas works well also but there are those that claim the danger factor goes up when you use it.
WD 40 is a better cleaner than it ever was a lubricant and the residue will protect the metal surfaces you clean.
Some options.
Carry on!

I had to take off for a bit, and some rust started forming inside my RCBS Small Base .308Win die, it took a while, but soaking it in CLP, giving it a scrub with a hard nylon brush (over several days), and a thorough degreasing and drying with intermittent tumbling in corn media solved my problem.

Works the same as it did before. No scratches, no stuck cases, all good!
