Doubt very much it was dropped.

Swiss diopter mount tool, Flat narrow part into slots on nut, wings to help turn.
Thinner section of one wing is for slotted screw holding front sight on to K31 front sight ears.

Normally looks like this. Note there are variations with and without the round holes drilled on the nut. Maybe the reason most do not have the round holes.

So how did the Genius from the School of the Mechanically Declined break it,
or no story given?

Story not given to me. Many of our members are farmers I wouldn't want to arm wrestle with. Could be nut was hardened too much or missed being annealed and is brittle.
