I have the opportunity to go on a once in a lifetime guided caribou hunt. The plan is for 2018. I may have an option to go with a friend and be hosted in BC, but just want to make sure I weigh all the options. Right now a guided hunt is really appealing to me and seems like it may be a better way to go. What options do I have for a reasonable cost. Many hunts for 2018 are near $15000. I'm looking more in the $7000 range, but certainly want a quality hunt. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

A hosted hunt will certainly be cheaper, that's what I did a couple years ago and hope to do again this fall. You are at the mercy of your hosts knowledge of the hunting area and the limits of amateur gear and logistics. But it's a good option if you all do your homework.
Good guide/outfitters have very high overhead for gear and base camps etc. and short seasons during which they need to recover their fixed costs before they even start to make a profit, but nothing beats taking a pack train of good horses into the high alpine meadows for caribou. Good luck whatever way you choose.

On a hosted hunt it's pretty easy to find and kill a legal bull. A lot harder to find and kill big Bulls. It does happen though. If it was me and I really wanted to kill a big bull and could afford it I would go guided.

Check out the Yukon for caribou hunts.........I don't think they have gotten that high there yet.........I could be wrong but I think you can get in on a good caribou hunt for around your budget. I used to know all the outfitters but not so much anymore. Make some calls and get some prices, you can get a list of outfitters from the Yukon Outfitters Assn. The best caribou come from the central eastern region of the Yukon, from Faro north to the Hart River and over to the NWT border, check out the outfitters in that region. #1 in the world came from just north of Faro.
If you want a good barrenground then look at the outfitters up the Dempster highway.........that is an easy hunt and usually produces book or very close bulls for not much money..........It is also cool to see 10,000 animals in a day or less, when they are there in full force.
