Hey fellas, last two weekends i've been lucky enough to head up north of Yellowknife and do some Barrenground caribou hunting. The first trip I made we took some students from the high school I work at to MacKay Lakes, about 200km northeast of YK. Last weekend me and a buddy went about 200km north of Rae Edzo. The pic with the caribou was from when we went with the students. The one on the left was a cow, the other was an immature bull. Great trips (minus not seeing any bull on the second trip) Enjoy!!

Thought I would just add some caribou pics that I have. These are 2 years ago on the ice road north of Yellowknife.

the dead caribou was a yearling that someone shot and just left there, from what i could see there was nothing wrong with this caribou, it hadn't even been field dressed yet. I saw this a couple of times during my trip.

 This is a little disturbing given that barren ground caribou numbers are decreasing in NWT and western NU.... Any reason why good tender meat is just left out there? Did you use the opportunity to teach the students about wastage?

the whole caribou that i found was on the second trip i made and we only took the students on the first trip. the other distrubing thing that we saw was the hundreds and hundreds of gut piles on the edge of the ice road. the caribou populations won't get any better with that many animals getting taken.

I haven't been caribou hunting yet, but I know they don't come too close to Iqaluit much anymore. a couple of years back there was a small herd and a buddy went to get one for his family, but they had moved on, but not before a dozen or so had been shot for target practice and left where they were.
