Greetings,

There is a sporterized Swed Mauser on the EE and with my love affair with this caliber and wanting to build a tactical/precision rifle with it I was wondering how strong is the CG action and how hard can I push it with high velocity reloads?

Even though I may be selling it out from under me, here is the link so you can take a look at the rifle.

The price is almost too good to pass up.

Thanks for the help,

Matt

The loading manuals are conservative in that cartridge for a reason. The M96 Mauser action is not as strong as the M98, and not anywhere near as strong as a (well designed) modern/post WW2 metal technology action.

There are internet stories of people loading CG's to high pressure and being happy with them. In the same vein, there are internet stories of people blowing them up trying to do same.

I'm in the midst of a 6.5x55 build, but on a current Savage action. I hope to run 2850-2900 fps from a long-ish barrel with 140gr target bullets. I have a very nice CG M96 full length that I wouldn't dream of going much over 2650 fps with. There's a thread in the reloading section "6.5x55 in a strong modern action" that I started, that has lots of info from people with experience with this cartridge.

The 94 swede action is not weak. Swedish gunmakers chamber 8x57, 30/06, 9.3x62, and even .270 Win..
The lack of safety lug and poor gas handling are what limit me when working up 6.5x55 loads.
Slightly flattened primers or measurable case head expansion is where I retreat. Loosened primer pockets are just way over the top IMO, though some idiots seem to get away with it.

Fast twist, long heavy bullets and oversize bores limit velocity to under 2700 fps at sane pressures. R22, 139gr scenar, 140 amax, 142mk are golden in all my swedes.
The best ones hold 1/2 moa with new arsenal barrels from tradex, the worst still beat moa.
Load testing is best done at 200+ yards where the long slugs have 'gone to sleep'.

Downrange performance is eye opening. Out past 500yds they routinely outshoot the HB .308's. High B.C. bullets hold the wind better.
Slow lock time can hamper results, a trigger, bipod and firm hold minimize the jarring you will notice when dry firing.

That EE rifle looks ok ..... bore condition takes priority for long range.

Good Shoot'n

I have worked up loads for mine with 140 gr Noslers and the bolt started to stick around 2800fps if I remember correctly without checking my notes. 2700fps is around max velocity/pressure that my swede likes without flattened primers or bolt sticking. Accuracy did not improve with higher velocities. Your results will vary.

Poor choce for any kind of precision rifle. Slow locktime, weak action, etc. makes an excellent huning rifle.

Buy some kinf of used target rifle for a solid bottom, strong action with a good trigger, fast locktime, etc.

Amen to Ganderite.

Also, the barrel life on this gun is unknown. The Swede offers its best accuracy in 1500 rounds. It's best days may be behind it and re-barreling this would be a money pit. This is a hunting stock on this gun too. All-in-all not an ideal range-queen.

I LOVE this cartridge, and if looking for precision rifle in this caliber, Tikka is the answer, but at much more money.
