We need to realize that we have a wonderful privilege as regards antiques here in Canada
and be very careful not to make enemies to this law, with the police or people in general.
It’s not something that we want to make well known especially to those who are careless
or of low scruples. Several States have already removed antique status and more will follow.
If police confront us we need to be respectful and realize that they are doing their job, and are
not required to know all about antiques, or know at a glance that your gun was made before
1898.
Only good PR will help us keep this privilege. Carry the paperwork and treating people who
are not informed with respect, will go a long ways toward making a friend to this law instead
of an enemy
 
It is not a privilege.

It is an untrampled human right that has not been infringed, unlike for guns after 1898...

As far as I'm concerned, antiques are exactly in the category they should be in and require no changes to legislation (actually, more guns should be added to the antiques category, like they have in the States). I say this simply because of the whole complexity that revolves around antiques. Most of them cost an arm and a leg to begin with: $1000 at least to start for anything decent. Then, you have to get yourself a reloading kit and ammo components for several hundreds more, if you happen to have a cartridge antique (for which the ammo is often obsolete and hard to get.. and when it's not too hard to get, you still need to make special loads to feed them safely). Finally, you also have to invest a lot of time into learning how to reload properly, which is a tedious task. Then, once you're all done, you end up with a VERY expensive & relatively underpowered toy that you can shoot very sporadically, as you can't be putting to much wear on this 120+ year old gun.

Moral of the story? If you're up to no good and need a gun, get yourself a street piece for 500$ all in (after all.. I'm sure every Canadian citizen "knows people", right? even if they're a hardcore liberal douche). You can also get a pack of factory-made ammo from the same guy for 20$ and you're good to go. In other words, antiques are for law obedient collectors who do not intend to commit crimes (and because it'd be a very freakin stupid way to go about it, considering how much illegal crap is smuggled into this country on a daily basis)... whereas criminals get themselves something both much less expensive and much more effective.

In other words, we need not to worry too much... it's all under the control of logistics (a question of money & convenience). ;)

Well New Jersey is at least one state that goes beyond just carry and regulates possesion of antique handguns. "It is unlawful to knowingly possess any handgun, including any antique handgun, without first having obtained a Permit to Carry"

I could probably guess what other states/cities might have similar restrictions ? mass,ilinois, new york city, DC etc.
 
Well you know saying to keep a low profile and then posting all theses Questions on CGN is not doing us any good i dont think...

Questions like if a deer attacks me can i shoot it with my antique gun or if the neibours dog attacks me can i shoot it with my antique hand gun. can i carry my Antique handgun down town. what will happen if i do something really stupid.... ECT ECT ECT..

Really dont you guys know this site is monitored by more than just Antique collectors and gun nutz.
Posting storys about other places that are makeing antiques harder to get.. Holly crap you guys should just pack up all your Antiques and take them to the Police for there smelter right now.

Im not helping by bumping this thread but really a good Dose of STFU wouldnt hurt.

I guess that comment is directed at me. The link I provided seemed to be innocuous public knowledge and certainly not beyond a bureaucrat's ability to google. I honestly fail to see how such information is of any real value to the monitors from CFC/RCMP/CSIS/. They clearly know what US jurisdiction have signifigant interplay with the laws in their own backyard.

If I indeed erred in my judgement to point out this information, I appologize.

Yes i know its in the USA but i never knew about that till you posted it.
Maby your right it might not mater at all but it all adds up.

I can find more info to fight the Antique gun collectors if i wanted to right in this BP section of CGN than looking on the net.

Hey im guilty as well i have posted stuff i figgered was general info but then find out its not so well known and i shoulda STFU myself.
Im just saying we should watch what we post as its been pretty weird stuff posted as of late.
Im more talking about the threads with the Stupid headlines they draw attention more than some link.
 
What i've been told could be wrong but it's ma. ny. ca. mi. nj. that many who are selling refuse to sell to. I tried to buy a m1892 french and was told in minisota it's registered and must be sent to ffl only.
 
Most m1892's were made after 1898 (1899 in the US is antique cut off). Most 1892's I've seen advertised in the US require an FFL due to the date of manufacture including the nice one at Dixie....
 
Mods should'nt this be in politics/alerts/legalesse? Seriously this is becoming a joke of a forum and is going to be the downfall of not only western civilization (LOL) but at least Antique regs as we know it.
