Just getting into the sport and I have a question about 'side matches". I can see how the long range rifle matches etc. would work, but what about pocket pistol/derringer matches. This sounds like fun but aren't these weapons prohibited?

What type of side matches have you see? Are they usually pretty standard or are they sometimes something new.

I used to attend 3D shoots and some of the side matches there were pretty cool.;)

So they are prohibited. So what. They still work.

Side matches don't count in the final score for the day. If you don't have a gun for the match, or you are not interested in shooting it, then it does not effect your results.

We don't run a lot of side matches because of the extra time involved. We currently do six stages. When we did only five it did give us more time for the occasional side match. If we have a few people that have a few guns they would like to shoot and make arrangements to bring them on the stated day then we end up with a side match.

12(6) Prohibited handguns can be shot the same as other handguns. This has nothing to to do with shooting in competitions. Other prohibited guns, all the other 12(X) guns, are not being issued permits to transport to the range.

Once again, this is not the case for prohibited handguns. Only those who have them (registered) can have them. Other than that there are no additional restrictions compared to other handguns.

Some of us fortunate enough to be Grandfathered under 12.6, bring out a toy or two to let others try them in a side match.
No great skill involved in using them.
Just don't get your finger over the muzzle!!

Some of the side matches we done in the past have been team events. For example first team to cut a rope off @ 25 yds wins or the rope can be substituted with a 4X4 timber (stake cut).

We usually have a cowboy clays event (trap).

We have done speed elimination shoots that place 2 shooter working their way to the center of a bank of 8 or so pepper poppers in which the middle poppers will overlap when knocked down (whoever's popper is on the bottom wins - no timer is required) we have done these shoots with pistol, rifle and shotgun with various combinations of each - sometimes all 3 if we feel like dragging out a ton of steel. This is a lot of fun but to go through a full elimination for all shooter can use up a pile of time.

I have also heard of precision handgun and main match rifle side events as well.

We have contemplated throwing together a cowboy bullseye match too. It would consist of 10 rounds at 50 yds in 10 min for score. 10 rds at 25 yds in 40 seconds and 10 rounds at 25 yds in 20 seconds. The shooter would shoot duelist (1 hand) but could use 2 pistols so a reload would be avoided. Basically this a very reduced NRA bullseye course of fire and would use NRA style handgun targets.
