Does anyone have a contact who can restore a Savage 1899 lever to case hardened finish?
Also looking for a smith who is comfortable working on older 1899's and pre-mil 99's.

Doug Turnbull is the first company that came to mind but I'd prefer to keep this little project on the Canadian side of the border if possible.

That being said has anyone on here dealt with Turnbull?

What sort of B.S could I expect out of customs by sending the entire rifle down and getting it back across?

I was in contact with TMG Services here on Gunnuts. He's in B.C. I've never seen any of his work or know what he's charging, but he says he is running about a year behind. Maybe get him your name and info and he will put you down on the list.

Turnbull does not accept any work from Canada, thanks to our goverment trying to save the world. Don

That's what I thought.
(Don't we all sleep better at night knowing that we're preventing the next 911 by not dealing with the neighbors?)

I'll be contacting Ralf Martini in Cranbrook B.C to see if he wants to take on the project.
Turnbull's specialty may well be lever guns but he has nothing on Martini when it comes to flat out quality of work.

i'll try to get contact info for you next time im at the gun club

Why Thank You very much.
East or West I just want this little jewell back to as close to original as possible.

Not that it's helpful to your search but I saw a rifle action that Turnball did for Ralf Martini and the colors were fantastic

I picked up one of his cards at the Irishtown gun show - he had a couple of Savage 99's he case hardened on display too.
Douglas - I'll PM you Kob's contact info.

Try Arthur Troth Mt Brydges (near London) Ontario Does unbelievable wood and metal work. Old English gunsmith his case hardening is excellent!

I tried it myself. There are a lot of articles on the web on how to do it. Technically, it isn't difficult. I used a small SS box, loaded it with the lever (an 1899) bone meal fertilizer and small strips of leather, heated the whole thing on the charcoal BBQ, then when the box was red hot on the bottom (hot as it would get), I popped the top off the box and dumped the whole mess into a bucket of water with some oil on top. The finished product showed a reasonable amount of color, but it wasn't a great job and kind of splotchy. I figure if I messed around a bit and tried it a few more times, I would have got it but, I didn't bother repeating the process. Proved the concept out, but that was about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot go wrong with Oskar Kob and his turnaround time is unbelievable. I believe Oskar does all of Martini's CCH. Just yesterday, he showed me the Martini action he had just completed. His handle on CGN is Oskar or oskar - cannot recall which. PM me if you want contact info.
