Hi guys
I had a case head seperate on my 270 today, and the rest of the casing is stuck in the rifle chamber. I tried using a cleaning rod to get it out but that didn't work, so now I need more ideas please.
Thanks Gord
First make sure the chamber area has some light oil in there. Just dribble some down from the muzzle. It won't hurt anything.
Push a 30 cal bronze brush on a rod down the bore from the muzzle. It may take the case with it as it passes through the chamber.
If it doesn't then pull the brush about two inches back into the chamber. You want to have some of the brush past the case mouth so the bristles are outside the case.
Now tap the rod a few times to back the brush out of the chamber. It should take the case with it.
Don't forget to clean up the excess oil out of the bore before you shoot it.
I had this happen to me with a .35 Whelen. When I got home I took an easy-out on the end of a socket extension and verry carefully inserted it into the broken case. I gave the easy-out a slight twist so it would dig into the case. I then dropped a cleaning rod down from the muzzle and that knocked the case and easy-out out of the chamber.
Before using the easy-out in the chamber I had cut the head off another case so I could see which size easy-out would work best.
Another method I've heard of is to insert a shotgun cleaning brush into the broken case and using a cleaning rod from the muzzle to push the case/brush out.
