Hello
So I just got my case length gauge for .223
My question is , How far do you screw the thing into the cutter
because I screwed it in pretty far (until it would not go in anymore) and it took what I am pretty sure was way to much off the case !
Thanks!

If we're talkin Lee you screw it in all the way. Some of them are just too short as made and you have to decide if it is too short for your uses. I have had some exact on the trim to length some slightly longer/shorter. In the case of mine that trimmed a couple though below the trim to length I use the shells that way anyways.

Yes it is a Lee
I just adjusted it until it trimmed to what I thought was best , but also the chamfer tool takes a little off as well!

The two of them I have are just about the Max case lenght as per SAAMI specs.

However what I hear alot is that they aren't always bang on. According to the guy who awnsered my question at Lee's, they aim for the max case lenght thought.

Any ways. I myself have a hard time screwing them in all the way, I need to use a wisegrip.

Is the gauge stamped for the 223? Are you using it with the shell holder?

I've had no problems with the one I got for my 300 win mag, takes a little bit off some of the cases and others it doesn't touch. It's screwed in all the way.

just measure it with a caliper (from the flat portion to the pin point) and check if it's within lee's tolerance :

The case trimmer should trim the case somewhere between the max. and min. allowable case length for the cartridge in question. Our case length gauges have a tolerance of +.000 and -.015. Handgun cartridges that headspace on the case mouth have a tolerane of +.000 and -.010. It works much like a "go-no go" gauge in that if it does not trim, the case did not need it.

If it's not, lee will replace it.

The tolerance is checked against SAAMI Max case lenght

Mine was very tight as well , ! I know that the max case length is 1.76 and it took it down to just over 1.5something

I will do this , thanks !

According to my Hodgdon manual trim to length is 1.175 if your trimmer is going way shorter, contact Lee and I am sure they will replace it.

oops typo thanks for correction.

No worries!
I think I saw the max trim length and thought that it should not be under that but after checking on some other forums I guess it is ok to go under 1.760
I just have not been able to find out what the minimum trim length is
I am new to this and just trying not to blow myself up , however I loaded up a few rounds the other night and they worked really well!!

I was doing some .308 win with these last night. The trim length is 2.005". I could only get it to do 2.010". I have the gauge screwed in all the way I'm pretty sure. I'm going to stick with the 2.010" as the max is 2.015".
