When shooting my Savage 99 in .303 Sav. this morning, the case seperated at the neck. The neck is still in the chamber and I have not been able to remove it. It was a light load with a cast bullet, Imperial case, 8 gr Unique powder. I have it soaking in oil in the hope that it might loosen it but no luck yet. Any suggestions?

I would try something around a .45 cal. bronze brush. Insert it in the chamber and thru the broken case.give it a sharp pull back and the brissels should pull out the piece in the chamber......Ken

I've also had this happen, and what worked for me was to pull a Bore-Snake through the barrel from the muzzle; the bronze bristles on the snake pulled it out.

One more trick, if you push a standard 30 cal brucsh into the chamber until it sits in the neck and pull it backwards, the bristles should dig in to the case, and pull it. I know that's difficult with a 99, but it can be done with a pull through, and a short rod to push it into the chamber.

If you are handy to Saint Jojn,N.B. call Blue mountain Sports 1-506-468-2919 . It can be removed if its being difficult by making a cerrosafe chamber cast and then popping it out.

pack the chamber inside and outside with ice, or throw the whole rifle in the freezer overnight.....them try the 12 guage brush trick again. The cold will shrink the stuck case slightly. You'll want it to be dry before you do thisthough...not oily...

What I've done with bolt guns is to use a tap to thread the inside of the neck, then use a stack of washers and a bolt as a puller. I don't know if the 99's action will give you enough clearance to try this, but with the action stripped it might work.

Good luck.

My brother has a Savage 99 in .243.
Twice he has had the case rip in half when extracting, leaving the front half in the chamber.

Both times:
1. We gently shoved a .22 cleaning rod (with no jag attached) up the barrel until it contacts the stuck case.
2. Stood the rifle up (on its butt).
3. Took a soft mallet and tapped the handle of the cleaning rod.

After a tap or two the stuck case popped out.

Try this.
Close the bolt. Stuff toilet paper down the bore and pack the chamber and the first half inch of barrel as tightly as possible. The cleaning rod should bounce on the packing. Open the action, turn the gun muzzle up and drop a cleaning rod down the bore to drive the packing out.
My experience is that sometimes you drop the rod once, sometimes twice but when the packing drops out, so does the brass.

If all else fails, find an old round file that fits snug in the neck of a fired case. Heat the file and bend it 90 degrees at the spot where it will reach the stuck neck. Push the file in and turn it a bit and pull. I have never failed to remove a case using this method, but things must fit properly so as not to engage rifling or score chamber. Good luck,Mark

If it's not coming out fairly easily, maybe it's time to visit your local gunsmith, and let him have a peek. Most case seps are not difficult to remove. Many will remove just by bouncing the butt on the ground a couple of good raps. The chamber may be pitted, or damaged.

It's finally out! My friend had some cerrosafe but couldn't find it. He made several tools to try and hook onto the case but that didn't work. finally he was able to bend the case enough to engage a cleaning rod through the muzzle and that did the trick. Thanks to all for the advice.
