I've got one of those Lyman case gauges (the ones that are metal and have a whole slew of calibres cut into it) and I check each time I reload a case. Way quicker than the calipers.
That said, I have yet to trim a case from my .308 bolt gun, yet I have had to trim once-fired cases from my Norc M305. I guess that means semi-autos tend to stretch the cases more than a bolt-action gun.
