Casehardened a Stevens 44

I relined, blued and casehardened a Stevens 44. I like the look of it now.

It looks really good and very even coverage, in color and pattern but it is interesting how different steels take to different colors. Nice work. Same as the no1 you did

How deep into the steel does the case hardening go can it wear off?

I used the same method and charcoal as the number 1. I think the carbon content makes a difference in the colors. The carbon only goes in about 20 thousands of an inch. The colors wear off easily but the hard carbon surface is very durable.

Sorry I just do this as a hobby so don’t have a business licence to take possession of pistols to caseharden them.

I can do antiques, that wouldn’t be an issue. The challenge is finding time, I have a number of projects I need to get done before I take anymore on.
