So today I ran into Regina to get some stuff for my hunting trip next week with my buddy from B.C. One of the things I needed to get was a licence and tags for him, not a big deal. So I picked up some ammo went to the counter and I was told " Cash only for Tags "....

I said Pardon...

Yep " No one in town takes interac for tags " I was told

So I replied " And nobody carries 160.00 cash around either "

I was then told that it is standard practice for cash only !!!

I was more then a little surprised by this statement and mentioned that in the last twenty years I have never paid cash for tags and that I will go to Wal mart instead to get my tags.

This is going to be the last straw for our one and only useless gun store in the area. I am sorry , I prefer to support local business and small shops and go out of my way ( 80 km ) to do so. When I get there I expect a little more respect then that !

I will have to drive to S'toon now to support their business minded stores. Rant over !

Selling licences is a service, not a money maker and by taking credit cards for them....retailers have to pay a certain percentage to the credit card company thus reducing the already small amount they make or it could even end up costing them money. Most retailers sell them with the hopes it brings in customers and they eat the credit card costs but I guess this shop figured it wasn't worth it any more.

Ive heard of it and ran across it once. I think its the store choice because they lose a little bit money on the interac transaction. If possible I'd tell them to keep everything else and get my stuff and my licence elsewhere.

This is off topic I know, but not being a hunter (at least not yet), what happens if you spend money on a deer tag (for example) but you get skunked while hunting.

Does the deer tag transfer over to the next season, do you get a refund, what happens?

Nope, you pays your money and you takes your chances. Tag is only good for one season but the unused ones do make great Christmas tree decorations!

Consider it like a lottery ticket. Once the draw time (season) is over, that's it! Buy another tag for the next season.

Nope....you get the warm feeling of donating your money to conservation....

We used to have a lawnmower, chainsaw dealer that sold tags...He gave it up because of the time involved in issuing tags,
especially the out of prov guys who would come in in groups. So he would miss out on the sale of a $2000 lawn tractor to
make $10 for an hour of occupied time. So I can't really blame anyone for trying to get the most $$$ out of every transaction.
They are in business to make money. :)

What happens to your driver's licence at the end of your term even if you didn't drive?;)

Same same.

no refund.............but if your hungry..
you can always make up a nice tag soup;)

I paid 40$ foe a box of shells I could have gotten somewhere else for 35$
I bought my tags and had to pay cash. However...

I can go there tomorrow and, if money was tight but my dream gun showed up on the rack, it would be off the rack and in the office without a deposit.

I can choose the gun I want, be it Canada or US and it will be brought in for me,... same for ammo when I really wanted some big factory 45/70's to try.

For me, privately owned gun shops all come at a compromise.
The cost/benefit anaysis has definitely worked in my favor.

If money was tight for a gun I would go elsewhere, as I was in there this summer to look at an R-55 and they wanted 650.00 for a used classic that I could have bought up north for 539.00 NIB.

I know what you are saying as I go out of my way to support local/small shops but there comes a time when Darwin prevails and stupid is as stupid does.

North Pro will get the call next time I need something.

Yup..Not uncommon for stores to only take cash for tags. No big deal, IMHO.:)

Same same.

Or your insurance premiums, if you don't have an accident that year.

Game tags and a license mean you have the right to go and TRY to harvest a critter, bought and paid for.
No guarantee that you WILL harvest a critter.

Cheers

You get another decoration for the x-mas tree.

The smart store operators that take care of their customers just add a service charge to your bill if you want to buy tags with a credit card with all your other purchaces.
Rather than send you away.

They do the same if your getting your gun club membership there too.

I would think that would depend a lot on what province you are in. I know adding an additional or non-government sactioned service charge to licences or other government services is illegal in many provinces.......

Exactly, I will always support the small guy and will always bring enough cash to cover my license fees.
