Hey guys, not sure if I'm posting in the right forum... I'm looking at an 8" Dan Wesson M744 44mag. The guy selling it says that it has only fired "cast bullets". Are cast bullets lead ones?? I heard it is not very good to shoot lead from guns that have muzzle vel. over ~1000ft/sec bc the lead melts and bungs up the barrel...
Thoughts from the experts??? Also, any thoughts on this Dan Wesson?? It comes with a x2's Tasco scope and he is asking $650
Thanks in advance :)

That is a popular misconception, swaged lead bullets are pure lead and very soft, they may lead a barrel at over 800 fps. Cast bullets can be made harder by adding tin and/or antimony or a harder mix to begin with including very hard Lino or Mono print metals, or heat treating finished bullets. Harder cast bullets that fit the bore properly and possibly gas checked will not lead the bore much unless the bore is rough or in poor shape. I regularly use cast bullets up to 2600 fps with no leading problems, so your Dan W. shouldn't be a problem, in fact, lead bullet usage should make your barrel last much longer with good accuracy.

XLNT advice above. As for the DW itself, it is a fine revolver and highly accurate. I have a couple myself and am very pleased with them. Some parts may be a bit scarce now because the original company no longer makes them, but barrels, shrouds etc are still available from CZ USA . You can see their website. Do a little research on the 744 and see the comments. I dont think you will find anything negative.
Cheers:)

The problem with cast bullets and DW revolvers, is the ported barrels will end up welded to the frames eventually using cast bullets. If you use a good high temp anti seize on the threads it will slow the process down, but your best bet is to use the unported barrel with cast, and the ported barrel with jacketed bullets. Good guns though. - dan
