Cast Bullets for Browning HP 40S&W

Not for a .40 S&W, but cast bullets work just fine out of my Inglis. You have to keep velocities down with cast bullets. There are a couple of loads on Handloads.com.

Now why would you have to keep velocities down with cast bullets in a pistol???

Let me first say that I am new to pistol shooting. I have reloaded for 30-06 in the past but have no experience with pistol calibers or with cast lead bullets.

I would like to know if anyone has found a good load, using cast lead bullets, that works well in their 40S&W BHP. Is there anything I should look out for.

I currently have some CCI brass and will likely start working up a load with CCI primers, Hodgdon's Titegroup and 180 grain "Hard Cast Match Grade Copper Plated Bullets" listed on WSS website.

I also load for a bhp in 40 s&w,i have had excellent results with cci primers, and 4.6 gr of titegroup and have always used 175gr swc from "the bullet barn".these are not jacketed though.Velocity has been averaging 1080fps at 4000ft elevation,20 degrees c. pistol is a h.p. practical.

A little lighter 40 cals

I owned a BHP Practical in 40S&W. It ate all the cast bullets I put through it with the factory barrel. The BarSto barrel I had for it was a jam-a-matic. Had a local guy look at the barrel. He found it wanting. The BarSto guy just didn't finish it. Once the chamber was corrected, it worked fine.
Currently I am using with very good results, a cast 155grain SWC bullet that my pal Rick makes. [R&Rbullets@mountaincable.net]
I like the lighter bullet alot. It recoils less, makes a nice clean hole, and with the right load is accurate. Too bad about that teeter-totter trigger....
