I loader some cast bullets in a Marlin 30-30 with the micro grove barrel, not very good on the accuracy!.. Anyone have some advise. I have not yet tried other loads etc. to see if there will be any difference. I have read the the micro grove barrel in not kind to cast bullets. Comments. Thanks

My first attempt at loading cast for my 45-70 microgroove Marlin wasn't exactly banner either recently. :rolleyes: Here's a few things I've learned.

-start slow and work up to a modest velocity. don't shoot for the stars.

-if accuracey starts to go south stop. And clean the bajeezus out of your barrel because you have just leaded it up

-use gas check bullets of hard cast if you want to get higher end velocities

-as Frank says also choose a bullet a thou or two bigger than your bore

-if all else fails revert to rule number one. start slow. and stay slow....

Microgroove barrels can produce fine accuracey with cast bullets, I've seen it. Just haven't found the loads for mine yet. It just takes a little dicking around to get it all right.:)

I own an 1894 in 357 mag with micro groove bbl and shoot cast through it regularly. It is plenty accurate, but I shoot them S-L-O-W-L-Y....i mean at low velocity. Never a leading problem that way either. My 1895 in 45-70 loves hard cast too, but it has Ballard cut rifling, not micro groove.....

Higher velocity and lead bullets and micro groove barrels do not work well. Keep the velocity down and it will work fine.

HOWDY;
Marlin 357 can work well ,gas checks are best for accuracy.45/70 has a modified micro groove barrel that works good with lite gas check bullets and needs to be cleaned after 25 rounds to stay accurate.
If you mix jacketed bullet with lead bullets the accuracy will be lousey. WHY ? just is !
The 30 /30 well good luck cause I have heard its a bear to shoot with lead.
