Cast Bullets

Headed up to the range today to make a believer out of a new guy using cast bullets. Same 285 gr Northman plain base, cotton patch, and COW filler load as posted before, but shot in a different Husqvarna rifle, an FN98 with 24" barrel.

Fireforming 30-06 brass to 9.3X62, we took three shots at 25, then here are the next six shots at 100 yd. Not too bad for a straight 2 1/2 power scope.

Adjusted scope down to hit three inches high, and the rest were fired at silhouettes out to 300 meters. Average velocity was 2174 fps (about 100 fps less than in the other rifle).

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new cast bullet shooter on board! :)
Ted

PS: Fifteen rounds fired and no leading at all. This is the second rifle with the same no-leading results.

Not bad for the speed yer pushing them at. Now use the velocity calculator on Handloads.com to get the load into the 1400-1500 fps. range using SR4759, IMR 4198 or Accurate 5744 under a pinch of kapok filler and see what the results will be. I'm bettin' the groups will tighten up a fair bit. Just make sure there ain't a trace of copper fouling in the bore and ensure that the boolits are seated out far enough to engage the rifling a tad.

Don't worry about game dropping performance with the boolits you're using inside of 100+ yds. on big game. If you place 'em right, ye got meat in the fridge.:)

Here's what my 1925 hex receiver Mosin Nagant 91/30 does at 1300 fps. with 180 gr. Bullet Barn
projos on a regular basis with my prefered load. Iron sights of course.

Thanks Shell Shucker,

This was the first load in this rifle, and will be used for hunting. The throats in both rifles are too long to seat bullets out to touch the lands, and still fit in the magazine.

We were both quite surprised to see how well the load shoots on the silhouettes. Dead on hold for chickens at 200 meters, 15-18" over for center hits on the pigs at 300 meters. Two inch groups at 100 in this rifle will be fine for hunting.

No worries Mate,
The more folks that get back to realizing the performance of REAL boolits at realistic velocities, and see the potential benefits of non-hyper velocity lead projectiles on game at reasonable distances, the more they'll come around to what our predecessors learned long back. Know yer gun, know yer load, know yer game and don't over extend the capability of yer shot.

Why not?, glad to see those bullets are working out.

I'm not sure if I'll have time for a dedicated bear hunt this spring, but I'll keep my 9.3x62 handy when I'm out and about, and with any luck, I may get a spring bear with those cast bullets.

Have a great spring!

500 grain over top of 44.5 grains of 3031. For my Marlin GBL. Still pleasant to shoot, but should do the trick if I was to interrupt Yogi's meal of fish guts left behind at one of the camps I fly into. Bad habit of American tourists just leaving stuff like that around.

Typical round nose that's all I can tell you. Bought them from Shooters Choice. They get deformed by my Hornady die with the compressed load. Still feed and shoot well though.

Hey nw mb. Love your Handi rifle. Quite similar to mine. What did you do to your front sight ? I've never seen one like that. I like it !!!

...you can trim the waste meat away with a pocket knife just about double the size of the diametre of the .458...and they get pretty sick very fast (think about it more like trying to stop a freight car at 2 mph, not a phonograph needle loaded up to 9,000 fps)

I just got back from the range after trying out my new Winchester(Miroku) 1873 in .357 mag.
The load I used for this barrel break-in mission was 6.0 gr. Blue Dot, held in place with a pinch of kapok
and topped with a 158 gr. LSWC. The brass was Starline & primers were Win. small mag. pistol.

Took a few shots at 25 yds. to check & adjust sight alignment then harassed some golf balls that were layin'
around. I then set some targets down at 80 yds. and started going for groups. There were only very light
breezes (For a fookin' change.) and after 30 rounds were used up, the groups shrank to an acceptable
size. I used the last 20 on a 6" gong @ 80yds. and only missed once. (Dang floater.)

I single loaded these rounds as they would hang-up on the chamber mouth if run from the magazine tube.
Time to order up some RN boolits for the next plinkfest.:)
