does anyone here actually make their own bullets? i've heard of it being done. what are the steps to do this and what kind of equipment is needed? also, wear does one find material to make the bullets?
If most of your shooting is with handguns or large caliber rifles and lower velocities fit with your type of shooting then cast bullets make sense. Older and obsolete cals. also call for cast bullets, as well as the amount of ammo you go through. Good casting equip. can initially set you back over $500 but can be recouped fairly quickly of you shoot alot. Some examples of costs are: good molds....$75-$125, lubesizer $175, melter $75-250, dies and top punches $25 each......Someone will tell you that you can get by with cheaper equipment such as Lee molds and tumble lube, I think you are further ahead to buy good equip. that will last. Try and have someone demonstrate the casting/lubing/sizing operation and see if it's for you.
Use the 30-30 as the limiting factor velocity wise. anything faster, has to be loaded down to 30-30 velocities. (Paper patching excepted)
There are lots of casters right here on CGN.
However, castboolits is home base for casters.
I use cast bullets in 30-30, 45-70, 38-40, 44-40, 303 British, and 44 Magnum.
I have played with them in 308, but as I already have a 30-30, I see no need to use my 308 for one.
Casting is another aspect altogether. But it's fun. Will eventually save you $$$ if you have a supply of lead but with the inital costs, will not save you any for a while.
Lee makes good molds. RCBS and Lyman make better molds but are twice the price.
The hard part is finding a tire shop that will sell you wheel weights. If they do sell/give them, they probably have lots of other people in line before you so that's the other hard part of tracking down lead.
Once you get set up, it allows you to shoot a lot more.
I have thought about casting my own bullets. I have found a source for precast and with the price of $16.50 /100 already lubed..I could not see myself going into the smelting and procurring lead to make them. I shoot cast in 25-20 , 38-55 and 30-30 gaschecked. Next stop a 45-70. Unless a person shoots a lot, it would take about 30,000 bullets before you see a gain. But to each thier own. This is my 0.02 worth.
Cast for lots of different cals and cast lots of different weights.
From 22 to 50 Cal.
It is a relaxing hobby for me.
I agree with Ben buy good equipment.
