Looking for information on loading cast bullets in a newly acquired cva scout 45/70. Interested in using Missouri 405 and 300 gr bullets. Smokeless powders I have. Imr 3031, 4895 and 4198. Wanting to shoot light loads. I’ve been handloading for over 30+ years and have never loaded cast. Do these bullets need to be lubed?

If you give Powder coating a chance, it will become your "best friend forever", it will simplify the many rabbit holes that shooting cast can become.

As for the 3 powders you have mentioned, I have used all 3 trying to perfect a light load for numerous 45-70's...my opinion is that they don't do well with lighter loads (BP equivalent, 1100-1400 fps) but are excellent performers at heavy "hunting energy "loadings (1400-1750 fps) . The heaviest of those will rattle your teeth & bruise your shoulder.
After the demise of SR4759 powder my got-to now is 5744 for light loads from "no recoil 250 gr .452 pistol bullets up to mildly recoiling 405's".
one "alert" to pass on when using 5744, you will notice unburnt powder in your bore after using but dont worry about it at all, accuracy will be as good as you can hope for using cast i have found.

I was just doing a little research on powder coating vs lube. I found a vendor that sells 405s with what I think is called hytek coated. Going to give these a try.
