Hi, I have purchased a 45/70 guide gun and I am wondering what is the best bullet choice is for hunting. I do reload, but I am not to familar with cast bullets so at this point I don't really want to start casting my own. So anything I use will be bought. Any suggestions on what to use and why. The gun is my close range (less than 125yds) brush gun for moose, black bear, and deer. Just wanting to see what my fellow CGNer's use.

Thanks Scott

Congrats Digger for owning one of the greatest old cal's out there.
I bought one in Marlin XLR SS last year and cant shoot it enough.

You'll find 300 grain Winchester factories shoot very well with enough recoil to let you know you've got a beast in you're hands.
The real beast comes out when you reload to max velocities(like the .450 Marlin) but you have to reload the 45-70 to reach and surpass the 45 Marlin.

It';s a safety thing in factory 45-70's ammo cause of all the older rifles out there that cant take modern chamber pressures.

I have tried cast bullets with black powder with about 1000fps velocity. if You do try with cast bullets, keep the velocity under 1900 fps to prevent lead fouling in the barrel.

Hard cast, gas checked, bullets are avail. in Wide flat Nose and Long Flat Nose bullets as well as other designs, the WFN and LFN designs are made up to approx. 500grs. and provide plenty of penetration and damage even if there is no expansion. These types of bullets provide more energy and knockdown power then any jacketed bullets commonly avail. In fact they mirror what experts call for in a serious, solid African game bullet. Taylor knockdown values for the 45/70 using these bullets exceed the .375 H&H and even the various .416s. Testing by B.Mitchell and myself(to a lesser extent), show the almost double penetration of these bullets compared to jacketed. So depending on your task at hand and your tolerance for recoil, I would recommend either the Woodleigh Jacketed(thick jacket) or 420-480gr. WFN or LFN GC hard cast bullets.

Thank you to everyone's replies so far. Ben, do you or anyone else know were I could buy some of these hard cast bullets to try out? I'm looking forward to trying these 420-480gr you speak of- they sound like good times.:D

Thanks Scott
