I have a new DPMS AR and I am trying to get the castle nut off I have the correct wrench but the nut is on tight. Before I get into trouble is the thread a left or right hand. How much force is needed to get the nut off will I need a vice to hold the lower and a bar on the end of the wrench.

also, this comes right from DPMS:

We use Blue Loctite on the castle nuts; the appropriate heat needs to be applied to release the compound. With the proper tools (receiver claw fixed in vise and castle nut wrench) it is an easy procedure

Thanks for the advice a friend of mine at my shooting club got the nut off using his wrench there was no locktite on the treads.

Dietz what is wrong with DPMS other than the nut being on to tight I have had no problems with my rifle is functions fine and is very accurate.

Another reason not to buy a DPMS.

We used a DPMS Oracle at Jo-brooks range day this summer a few months ago. I was RO for the carbines and all I did was put a moderate amount of lube on the carrier and the gun ran all day like a champ. DPMS may not be my first choice but the one we used was great.

Dpms is nowhere near mil spec. Their receivers are often grossly out of spec with regards to rail height and dimensions. Castle nuts should be staked just like your gas key.

Some people don't need a full mil spec AR. Most people in Canada hardly do enough shooting to actually notice a difference between high end and low end ARs when it comes to performance. As for the castle nut, I am pretty sure KAC doesn't stake their castle nuts and I've never heard of one of them shooting loose.

Not disputing that fact, but you get what you pay for. When a mil spec(or more mil spec) rifle can be had for similar money as a DPMS, why wouldn't you?? As for Knights not staking, I have a hard time believing that. KevinB is the man in the know here, perhaps he will set the record straight.
