Apologies to you experienced reloaders and to Hornady if I've misinterpreted something obvious, but I thought it best to post this in case someone else out there is about to make the same mistake (I think) that I nearly did
.
My Hornady 7th edition reloading manual, on page 898, states the minimum and maximum loads for 45 ACP using Win 231 over a 185g JSWC bullet are 5.9g and 7.2g respectively. My Hodgdon manual cites these as 5.0g and 5.9g respectively,,quite a difference.
Now, the Hornady manual, page 898 shows 2 different 185gr bullets above the load data, with 2 different C.O.L.'s , one being 1.135" and the other 1.230".
According to my Quickload program, putting 7.2g of Win 231 (MAX) under the 1.230" cartridge should give a chamber pressure of 20,413 psi. This is high. Putting the same (MAX) powder under the 1.135" cartridge gives a chamber pressure of 28,385 psi. This is a lot higher.
I could be wrong but to me it looks as though the Hornady load data on page 898 doesn't apply to the 185gr # 45137 FMJ SWC bullet seated to C.O.L. = 1.135" cited at the top of this page. I'm no judge of how hazardous such loads may or may not be in such a cartridge but the data does starkly contrast data for this cartridge and powder listed in other reloading manuals.
