On the original question, I've shot CB shorts out of my colt officer special (6" barrel) before; they're quieter than standard ammo, but nowhere near as quiet as they are out of a rifle. (the sound of the firing pin is louder than the report in a long gun)
There's a definite report out of the revolver, but it's still pretty quiet. Like a cap gun, maybe. A longer barrel or a semi-auto might reduce noise, although they probably won't cycle most semis.
I guess it depends on what's acceptable in your backyard...
My experience out of a rifle is that they are VERY quiet... Out of a handgun, they are NO WHERE near as quiet and might attract some attention if your not careful...
I'm not sure for a handgun but I have lot of experience with cb long on my differente rifle, i use it at my camping for pest control is less noisy of my high power pellet. Pretty sure is verry more quit on your handgun of regular ammo but I remember my llama 22lr make double of sound of my rifle with regular ammo probably it will maker the double of sound with cb to.
