CBQ Mag Change Idea

In reviewing the challenge of CBQ, my weakness has been changing magazines quickly as I move down range.

The first thing I did this year was double up my mags so that for two of the changes all I have to do is switch the mag from side to side. Much faster than dropping the mag and going to the pouch.

Like the rest of my equipment (Norinco M4gery with a 2.5X steel Weaver that is older than some of the shooters) my double mag set up is state of the art. I used contact cement to glue two mags to a piece of scrap wood and wrapped the pair with hockey tape.

It dawned on me today (3 days after the last match) that I could make one of the mag changes even faster.

You all know that the first mag change is a piece of cake. We fire 4 shots and have lots of time to change mags. Because I have been starting with a double mag, all I have to do is switch the mag from side to side. It struck me that this is a waste of the additional speed of a double mag. There is plenty of time to go to the pouch and take a fresh mag for the first mag change.

So, instead of starting with the double mag, suppose we start with a single. After the first 4 shots, drop the single mag, and then install the full double mag. At the next mag change (mid string), instead of going to the pouch (because both mags are empty), all I have to do is switch side to side. This saves time. The last mag change will still require going to the pouch, but it would be a single mag, not a double. I find installing a single mag slightly easier.

Does this make sense?

Deckard - yes, your 4 mags in one unit would mean no need to go to the pouch for a mag.

I already have one of those mags, and I have a coupler similar to yours. If I bought one more short mag, I could have 3 mags in one package. I would install it after the first 4 shots. Lots of time for that mag change.

Thanks.

get some 'fast mags' or similar mag holders and practice your mag changes.:)

I'd just go with that.... 'practice' this is something you can do dry in your basement at home.... personally i'd rather get the basics down first, then worry about the fancy stuff

Isn't that the premise behind the connectors on G36 and SAN mags? Multiple mags connected side-by-side?

Hey there, was hoping someone could answer a quick question, are 10 rounders allowed for cqb/Sr matches?
I'm under the impression that they are not when loaded to a full 10 rounds

I can't speak to what others are doing, but in the CSRA we have courses of fire that allow the shooter only so much time to shoot the string of fire.
These courses of fire may also dictate to the shooter how many rounds are in the gun to start. This can induce a mag change within the string and really drives the need for speed and proficiency.

Depends on where you shoot.

With the ORA - CQB - max 5 in the mag. Mag changes are mandatory part of the Course of Fire.

For ORA - SR (CFSAC) - 10 rounds in an LAR are fine according to the match organizer.

Not sure what other provincial rifle associations are doing and/or the DCRA. I think the DCRA limits you to 5 rounds? Somebody else here should be able to clarify that.
