Hi there, i bought my first bolt action Savage axis 2 in 223 and i started reloading. I bought 1000 of CCI BR4 primers and 2000 CCI 400 primers. My gun loves cci 400’s. Never a misfire with CCI 400 in all those 2000 reloads.

Eventually i used up all of those CCI400 primers and started to reload with CCI BR4 with everything else remaining same.

Now i am getting atleast 25% misfires in my bolt action, sometimes more. Once i got zero fire from a full mag in my bolt action.
With everything i heard or read, BR4 should be giving me better results.

I am going to buy more primers in a few days but only primers available at the store near me right now are CCI BR4 or Remington 6 1/2.
Remington 6 1/2 have same cup thickness as CCI 400 but Remington does not recommend using their 61/2 in 223.

Just want to know if anyone else have used Remington 6 1/2 in their 223 bolt action and what were the results.

The store have Cam Pro small rifle primers too please let me know if anyone have any experience with those too
Thanks

A few years ago there was apparently some BR4's that were misfiring, maybe a bad batch, or weak firing pin. I never had one not fire, of any kind.
I've seen a few savage axis rifles with messed up bolts/firing pins that were causing a lot of misfires, or firing pin not releasing at all.

I use Remington 6-1/2 in the 22 Hornet, but when I tried them in the 17 hornet, I saw some leakage around the primers, that I don't see with 7-1/2. Based on that, I will only use the 6-1/2, for low pressure cartridges.

Got a savage axis in 223 have only used ginex primers in it. Only 1 or 2 primers have failed to ignite for me. That's shooting apx 1300 rounds. I've experienced the same failure rate with ginex LPP and SPP as well.

few years back I had some BR2 large rifle primers that were giving me the odd dud round
CCI must have had a bad batch of them too

Will try some ginex or campros
Thanks

I am guessing its primers as i do not have any problems with CCI 400’s. must be that bad batch
Thanks

Could be, but it would be really rare to get a full mag that would misfire even in a bad batch. Would be worth trying some in another rifle.
The BR4's and 450's are supposed to be .025" cup thickness and 400's are .020". So the BR4's/450's need a good strong hit to deform and ignite, and if there's too much headspace with the brass that can cause issues too, makes for a weaker strike.

I have shot almost a brick ( 1000 ) of the rem 6 1/2 primers in my CZ 527 - .223 and never had a pierce or a FTF, I did have 1 FTF with a Rem 7 1/2 BR primer in that gun, that's the only SR primer I have had fail, I also shot over 6,000 rounds out of my 17 hornet over a 4 year period, using WSR, Rem 6 1/2 and 7 1/2 BR primers that was also a CZ 527, never had 1 FTF or pierced primer in that gun either.
