Anybody ever use CB (short or longs) for killin varmints?? I am thinking something along the line of a crow.

I tried them in my new Savage Mark II-F and they shoot pretty decent at 35 yards. I like their report too, quite similar to a high speed pellet gun.

I have and they work well. keep the range to 25yds on larger animals and you are good to go.
I have knocked over GS, ground hog size game as well as racoons and possums with head shots :D . I would say They actually make less noise then a highpower spring piston air rifle

I've used them on raccoons and squirrels out to about 25 yards and had good results with head shots, I would'nt use them much beyond that. I have made some kills on "pests" birds, half the size of a crow, out to about 40 yards.

I have killed several rabbits with the CCI CB Long out of a rem 597. Won't cycle the action, very quiet, accurate at the 25 yds I shot it at. I chronyed a few and they went out at 500-550 fps. No trouble going through the boiler room of a bunny, should take a crow no problem.

I use them sometimes and they are great if you need low noise, probably quieter than an air rifle! I would keep them for headshots only for critters bigger than a squirrel...

I use them (CB longs) in the backyard for crows, starlings, and the occasional raccoon regularly. For the coons a precise head shot is required, but it will do the job out to around 20-25 yards. Way quieter than a powerful airgun.

Using the longs as opposed to shorts seems to keep the chamber from getting gummed up. The longs and shorts have the same power level (I think they have primer compound only), so there's no downside to the longs.

Probably one Canadian Tire or another.....

they're a bit expensive and the accuracy wasn't impressive, but I plan on trying them on gopers too.
I gather a Paco tool would greatly improve or greatly limit their performance. I just don't know which.....
Anyone out there with a hollow-point maker that has a taste for experimenting?

Do you guys know a source of CB long in Montreal? I can't find any. thanks

i saw some at a small sports store on boul. ste. rose east in laval.can't remember the name but could find out...

thanks guys.
as for the hollow point CB, i'm sure that there will only be a limited improvement on the terminal ballistics. I played with many .22 airguns at 500fps range, none of the so called hollow point pellets worked. you need at least 700-800fps or so to achive a good expansion.

Tried the CB long on gophers yesterday.
I had problems with the distance in the beginning. I had my scope and everything set up for 75+ meters.... but the buggers kept popping up around 10 and 15.... so I had a couple of misses.
the hits were positive. the thud was very distinct when the gopher was hit, but the reaction was that of a wounded animal. Head hits were the exception, but I never had a body hit that stayed put.
I switched to Winchester Expert, that have a generous HP and are a lot cheaper than yellow jackets. Biiiig difference!!! Like Yoyo said, even with a good HP, I doubt that CBs would give visible results.
Sure, the gophers die, but I don't like to cause undue suffering to any animal. I doubt I'll be using them anymore, except for the situation where noise is an important factor.

I have no idea how would they work on grouse, but there is already a lot of debate regarding the ethics of using rifles, nevermind the use of underpowered ones.

Lebaron's in Montreal should stock them. They are listed in their catalog (both shorts and longs).

LeBaron is famous for the lack of items that you want, I think there's only 40% of the items listed on thier catalogue are actually in stock.

the best killing round in subsonic category that I tryed is the Aguila SSS. the bullet can't be fully stabilized in a normal barrel and it causes the bullet to roll in the target. It make impressive exit wounds
