This is a continuation from the old thread I bumped forward. I completed my portable system. The $13.00 CCTV camera I got off Ebay will work for gongs but since you can't zoom it it's a little poor for paper. I dug out an old digital camera I had and found the original box and AV cable. I now use this as the camera into the wireless transmitter as it has a zoom. In the attached pic you can see the monitor pic is of an 8 1/2 X 11 target so fairly small. My targets for 1000m are bigger so they will be even easier to see. All in I have around $200.00 into, including the 2 portable battery boosters I bought on sale from CT last week. I also use these for back up booster for my quad on hunting trips so their dual purpose. It all folds down into a neat easilly handling package. Initial tests in town, without the Yagi hi-gain antenna are showing good resolution at about 700m. Should be better out in the mountains with less signal clutter and line of site.

Well when I ordered the wireless transmitter and reciever off ebay they said 1000-1400m. The instructions that came with it said range would be dependant on building thick ness etc.

So what I hace is a cctv camera, or old digital camera with AV out jack hooked to a wireless 2.4 GHZ transmitter with a 16dbi hi gain yagi antenna. I also ordered a 20m AV cable to keep the transmitter well away from the camera and out of the line of fire. The camera is mounted on an old elcheapo tripod, as is the transmitter. I welded up a few mounts for the Yagi antenna and camera mount to protect them from stray bullets.

I use the screen from an old DVD player we used to use in the car with the kids. Rounded up some sigarett lighter 12 volt adapters from old electronics around the house plus a few plugs, wire and adapters from the source and the dollar store and she's working. Like I said I've had it working to around 500m + right in town so with the Yagi antenna it should be good for 1000m + out in the hills!
 
Very nice set up. I am so very interested in this antennae. My system uses the same idea as yours and 700ish yds line of sight is definitely max.

I am unsure if I should put an antennae on the sending side and/or a dish on the receiving side?? Any examples of dirt cheap receiving dishes?

Then how to wire up???? My Tx/Rx have an antennae that sticks out the back and I haven't been brave enough to take it apart to see the wiring yet. Maybe with an antenne it will be more obvious how the wiring goes?

Love to see examples of what could work. This stuff just got a whole lot less money.

You definitely want to have a zoom on your camera otherwise, it may fall victim to a bullet or shrapnel. I just put my camera and transmitter on the same platform as I am off and back a ways.

I have a 20m cable I got to go from the camera to the transmitter ($11.00 delivered from Hong Kong, 1.5 m cable $14.99 from Canadian tire??). As you can see I put the antenna up a ways. My transmitter has a coax cable fitting that is the same as the one that came on the 1m cable with the antenna. This is a smaller style fitting than normal cable TV size. My reciever has the same fitting as the normal TV coax so I'm going to try it on the transmitter end for now.
Also the 20m cable I bought is specifically designed for the cctv set up as it has a yellow video, white audio, and a 12 volt power jack. My transmitter has an extra ac out jack that plugs into this cable. I only need to supply power to my transmitter, and it in turn supplies power to the camera. Very nice tidy package!

Do you already have high gain antennas on either you transmitter or receiver?

To maximize your effiecncy you should put high gain antennas(Dish, Yagi...) on both your transmitter and reciever.

I have played around with some of those hong kong cameras and transmitters off ebay on my RC cars. Dispite the clames made buy the tranmitter manufacturer, the distance that you can see bullet holes is quit limited buy noise, but I was using omni directional antennas.

NO, right now I am just using the factory stock antennae that is like 7 " long

LCD from a car audio system. Batts are LIPO cells from RC planes.

Works just fine but I would like to reach out further. Any links to suitable antennae/dishes would be appreciated.

I will look at getting one of those Yagi antennae but the wiring isn't the same as what I have and not sure how these things wire up.

Would a wireless pan/tilt for the camera be useful as well. A system that could go beyond a 1500yards is no problem to design. A full blown system with stands, monitor, batteries and charger, transmitter/receiver and a wireless pan/tilt camera with sound could be done for sub $1000.

Distance is not a factor in the price unless you want something more than 1500yards. The camera and run time are the biggest cost factors. A hi resolution camera with 550lines is around a $100 there are cheaper ones but this will be dvd quality. Run time depends on the battery size. Lithium polymer batteries that will give you a run time of around 2hours and only take 20minutes to charge are the way to go. They are around $60 each and the charger is about $80 which will hook up to your car battery.

A complete kit would include transmitter with a heat sink (they can get hot) receiver, hi res camera, 2 batteries, charger, 7" lcd monitor, voltage regulator, and 2 tripods. Everything is Plug and play and very easy to setup.
$1000 would get you a turn key kit. You could put it all into a pelican or similar case, or I could supply one they are around $300
 
I think using stills would reduce your costs considerable, not to mention it's far less data to transmit. Unless you are doing very quick follow up shots, then a video or live feed is not required. Take the shot, trigger a photo, review photo, take another shot, repeat as required. A still version for out to 200m would be nice for us of greying eyes.
