A consumer review for TiN coating – caveat emptor

I thought I’d have three 1911/2011 pistol barrels TiN coated by this company.
As an IPSC shooter who averages just over 10,000 rounds/year, I thought TiN coating would help extend the life of my barrels.
The photos of their product on FaceBook and Instagram looked good.
The experience in dealing with this company has been anything but good.
In fact, I would classify it as extremely frustrating and infuriating.
Actually, let's just call it INFURIATING.

Here is the long story: ..............

I asked about costs and timeline for completing TiN and was informed “about a week”.
Cost was approximately $120 per barrel (plus shipping and taxes), which struck me as reasonable.
The entire process took from 15 October 2015 – 20 January 2016
97 days in total for the turn-around for 3 pistol barrels.

After 4 days in the snail mail, the barrels were held for 35 days.
They sat around and accomplished nothing.
I guess he has to wait until he has a fair quantity before sending the batch “to the lab”.
39 days so far.
Fair enough.

Then, 19 days in “the lab” for the TiN process.
OK, whatever.
Fair enough.
58 days so far in the process.

But now here comes the really infuriating piece of the venture: ……..
The next 30 days.
He promised to get these shipped to me and has failed repeatedly to physically put them in the mail since the day they were available “from the lab”.
That’s 30 days of him promising to mail the package back to me.
Throughout this 30 day period I had to hound and badger him with emails and messages ("where are they?") and he has repeatedly promised that he would mail them.
And each time he didn’t.
I missed a club match in December (no barrels) despite his promise of "you'll have them before the 22nd"
Throughout that period he also made repeated posts of photos regarding projects and gun sales on Facebook and Instagram …… so he has kept himself busy in his shop and business while not engaging in the simple act of mailing my barrels.
Once finally shipped, they were in the snail mail for 7 days.

He is slow to respond to emails and messages, but very fast to delete an enquiry on his Facebook page asking as to the whereabouts of the mail. There was one other customer who was making the same complaint about the whereabouts of his barrels as well. Our comments and concerns were deleted within about 30 minutes of posting on the CDN Gunworx page.

He demonstrates a clear lack of attention to detail in emailed conversations and a general disrespect for the customer/client. He continually lies (pathologically almost) about timelines and performing the simple task of mailing the package back to the customer.

I had a fellow shooter warn me about CDN Gunworx.
He had work done on an AR and, while the quality of the work performed was good (he said), the communication and timeline with CDN Gunworx was a bad experience.
I guess I should have listened, but I thought I’d give this Andrew Clarke the benefit of the doubt.
I was wrong.

The final, finished product, after this ridiculous ordeal, was sub-standard, to say the least.
Take a look at the photo of the 3 barrels.
The polishing on the feed ramps is quite varied.
The left hand barrel is a 1911 bushing barrel and is highly polished.
The middle and right hand barrel are 2011 bull barrels and you can see the feed ramps are dull and matte.
There is barely any “polishing” on the ramps.

I went and test fired them.
350 rounds (copper FMJ rounds) in one of the bull barrels and you can see that the TiN coating has worn off the feed ramp.
This is a match grade, Bar-Sto 40S&W bull barrel ............

So, in summary:
  • Over promises and under-delivers
  • Poor communication
  • Terrible customer service and follow through
  • Utter lack of integrity (constantly lies about the simple act of mailing)
  • Sub standard finished product - failed to accomplish the objective

So, your mileage may vary.
This just happens to be my experience that I just went through.
I would recommend that you look elsewhere for these services.

Caveat Emptor.

Wow, that sucks man. Their Facebook page looks really nice though! They have a good marketing person to swindle people's hard earned money. Their videos are painfull to watch as well.

Well, some good news - CDN Gunworx returned my money to me today.
They offered to have me return the barrels for re-coating, which was not an option as far as I was concerned. Instead I asked for my money back and they complied.

So, there's that.
There may be some integrity here.

But, caveat emptor.

Oii, too bad i found this after i mailed my BCG's and parts...they have been sitting in the post office for over two weeks and he constantly tells me they are going to investigate...mayzell just take the loss and have the parts shipped back

Never mind the whole debacle with the SLR preorder. I tried getting work done and in the end wrote it all off to an education on my part to never deal with that individual again.

Since he coated the feed ramps it says he has little experience as any coating is going to wear off even the best stuff and any coating that does that wear off is going to end up in the chamber.

Sounds like another garage mechanic trying his hand with firearms has the guy have a license to work on guns?

They are around the corner from me actually - they are fully licensed and are also licensed to work on prohibs... one of their guys has done volunteer work at our range. Nice guys. Never had any work done there so I can't speak to that.

Son of a #####! I thought it was just my luck with the bad experience I had, it’s infuriating for me to read your review after what I went through. They did my Jericho in dlc and when I picked it up, there were two large spots on the slide where the finish didn’t apply. I brought the slide back and they said I probably chipped it. They begrudgingly took it back and did the slide again but charged me $90 for the new labour and shipping. I’d been without my pistol since January so I paid up to end the experience. This time the blemish where the dlc didn’t apply was on the inside of the slide so i’ll eat it.

The worst part of the experience was getting my parts back in a sandwich bag, MISSING TWO PIECES. I know they’ll just blame me for losing them. Now I’m trying to find out how to acquire replacement parts which does it look like it’s going to be easy.
