Cerakote first spray

I did my first cerakote spray today.
Having previously done automotive painting and firearms with durablue it wasn't something that I couldn't accomplish.

I used a quality touch up gun with a 1.0 nozzle @ 30 psi

Went to local shop and sand blasted the barrel and receiver.

Sprayed a tack coat then two full wet coats.
Being a cerakote elite series I then heat cured at 300 degrees for an hour.

The final finish I'm amazed at.
Feels slick, looks matte finish which I was wanting.

I have done the hot bluing, cold bluing
This is simply amazing
 
Once you're set up for it, Cerakote is amazing and super easy. There is a considerable up front cost for all the equipment but it's not that bad if you already have some of the other equipment like air compressor and blasting cabinet.

I built a rolling paint booth cabinet type thing. When time to paint, I just roll it up to the garage door and open just enough for the fans at the bottom to exhaust the fumes outside.

For baking, I have an electic smoker I got on sale from Cabela's. Pulled the inner skin out and reinstalled after filled it with insulation, works amazing.

If you do enough of it, I highly recommend picking up a magnetic stirrer and some stir pills from Amazon. You don't have to sit there shaking your paint. The wire hanging kits from Cerakote are also well worth the money in the long run. Also, spend the money on the Cerakote reusable paint filters. They are cheaper in the long run if you paint often enough. Most Cerakote jobs are a tiny paint volume and using a paper filter every time gets expensive.

They recommend 120 grit aluminum oxide for blasting, but I've found the 80 grit stuff from Princess Auto works just fine. The blasting cabinet from Princess Auto, when on sale, is also the best bang for the buck. Perfect for the home gamer. I upgraded mine to a bottom syphon feed with foot pedal and it rivals the professional ones I've used. Next upgrade will be flashing to stop media build up on the inside ledges. Or I might just make a new, welded together one.
