Hi Folks,

I was just told by the registry person at the CFC, that the SMD12 I am buying "Had better come with the conventional buttstock installed...or it will become restricted!! No pistol grips! "

Isn't this exactly backwards?

Jeff/1911.

Yes the RCMP thinks that because Dlask tried to give there short shotguns a model name that means they where purpose built handguns. They're retards.

Currently the CFC (as of Juneish) consider all pump shotguns with pistol grips and barrels shorter than 16" to be handguns. This has been reflected in an FRT note, and new FRT numbers issued.

How are your new 12.5" pistol grip sg's going to be non-restricted then Canam?

let's wait & see if the CFC issues new certificates or letters to current owners of Dlask short-barrel shotguns. My unsderstanding is that the Remington marked ones were modified, which made the overall length 26 inch minimum for non-restricted not applicable. The "SMD 12 "marked ones were deemed new manufacture, which made them restricted with the PG. Lets' see how the court case develops...

I don't have a Dlask SMD-12 because it is restricted.
I have a Remington Express Magnum with a factory 8.5" barrel from Dlask. Non-restricted :)

My cert from the CFC says so

To the CFC that is a major difference

The FaRT has entries for the SMD-12 and Remington 870s with 8.5.
I'm sure Joe is making "both" configurations :D

You have GOT to be kidding!!!

That is 100% correct. If Dlask sells a Remington 8.5" 870 WITH A PISTOL GRIP INSTALLED the damned thing is restricted pistol.

If he sells it WITH A BUTTSTOCK INSTALLED it's a modular 870 shotgun and non-restricted.

Clear as mud.

Since you, the buyer, choose to put on a pistol grip, and since there is no law against puting a pistol grip on a short barreled shotgun (only against a TELESCOPING or FOLDING stock) you're good to go.

That's why they come with both the stock and the pistol grip and the same reason CanAm will be providing both stocks and pistol grips.

The SMD12 issue is over, any receiver marked SMD12 is an obligatory restricted pistol with or without a buttstock. Dlask swapped out all of those receivers a while back.

Yoda says "Restricted 12 guage pistol can only a dealer make" :jerkit:

I was specifically told by the CFC representative today, that if I put the pistol grip onto this shotgun, it immediately becomes restricted!

EDIT:

It has come to my attention since writing this, that this is incorrect, and that a "manually operated" shotgun can have an OAL less than 26" if it has no stock" ...the pistol grip does not count as a stock. Whew.

Jeff.

Sorry for the noob question, but I just need a bit of clarification.

If I have a shotgun with a 14" barrel and I want to put a pistol grip on it myself, that is legal? Or must this be done only by a "manufacturer?"

do you guys realize how much loss of productivity our firearms laws cost? its not just the money spent on the registry, its all the money spent on the CFC, RCMP law enforcement of the Firearms Act, bureaucrats, politicians/legislators, courts, lawyers, judges, juries, CFO offices, ATT, licensing/training, and the loss of productivity for all the people who have to keep up with these morphing laws!

only the government could incur $1,000,000 in expenses & lost productivity to ensure that Joe Canuck stores his .22 with a gun lock.

Solvarex,

This was true, to the letter of the law...but I understand that now there is a process in the works to close this "loophole". I hope I am hearing wrong. :(
