Cfe 223

I thought that CFE223 was supposed to be clean (or cleaning) powder? I got 2lbs but haven't tried it yet. Might make up a load to try out on the next range session. :)

Its supple to clean copper. My 223 doesn't copper in the first place the hodgdon data showed real good speeds but I never came close to that. 28.5gr suppose to get over 3400. I was shooting 28 gr and getting just over 3000.

CFE = copper fouling eliminator.

It supposedly leaves a coating in the barrel that reduces copper fouling. I don't notice much difference.

It is to slow for decent performance with lighter bullets. My Tikka likes it with heavier bullets.

CFE = copper fouling eliminator.

Close. Its eraser not eliminator.

COPPER FOULING ERASER (CFE™)
The technology developed for the U.S. Military that greatly deters copper fouling is now available in CFE™223 for your reloads!

Introduced in January 2012, this versatile spherical rifle propellant incorporates in its formula CFE, Copper Fouling Eraser. This ingredient, originally used in military propellant, greatly deters copper fouling. It contributes to longer periods of top accuracy with less barrel cleaning time. Being a spherical powder, metering is superbly accurate. CFE 223 yields top velocities in many cartridges such as the 204 Ruger, 223 Remington/5.56mm NATO, 22-250 Remington and the 308 Winchester/7.62mm NATO, plus many, many more. Match, Varmint and AR shooters will love this one!

Do I need magnum primers for CFE223 since it's a ball powder or will my regular primers be just fine? I'll have to dig out the chrony to check out what I'm getting. Thanks for the info Hometownhero.

Many people recommend magnum primers for ball powders but I believe ball powders predate magnum primers. Take that as you will. There are some people who think non-magnum primers will automatically fail to ignite if it drops below 0'C.

From my reading it doesn't leave a coating in the barrel but has fine metal powder (bismuth?) in it that "scrubs" the barrel with each shot fired. It's not supposed to wear out a barrel any worse than normal shooting though. It was developed for the military decades ago and several civilian powders have had additives like this but not advertised it as heavily.

Most people report slightly worse accuracy than Varget or Benchmark and only moderate copper fouling prevention come cleaning time. I'm not that interested in muzzle velocities so I can't remember what was said about that. I have a pound for a .308 I have that copper fouls like crazy but I haven't tried it yet. I'm not expecting any miracles though.

My data says nothing about mag primers. I was trying to use the pound of vlc 2 up that I have and tried both and made no difference for that powder. Im also trying to use the mag primers I have as well.

My match AR just loves it. I am getting way better groups than with varget and I can just throw the powder to boot rather than weigh each round.

I usually use Varget but bought a pound of CFE to try. Putting it under 60gr Nosler BT varmint I had one group out if 10 loads that got just a smidge under MOA out of my HK SL8-4 and it was one of the hotter loads from the book.
It meters really well, so far I like it but will need to do some more testing.
I use CCI 400 primers. No problems after the first 50 rounds.
