Defence industry representatives say they have been briefed about plans by the Canadian Army to acquire what is being called the Semi-Automatic Sniper Weapon or SASW.

Canadian Army spokeswoman Krysthle Poitras explained to Defence Watch about the SASW:

“The Semi-Automatic Sniper Weapon (SASW) is still in the planning phase,” she pointed out. “It is expected that 272 SASW will be delivered to the Canadian Army by end of 2017 or early 2018; however, at this time, we don’t have a delivery date because there is no contract in place with any specific company. The purpose of the weapon is to provide our snipers with a lighter weapon that can be used to deliver a high volume of precise fire at a shorter range (such as in built-up areas), and for quick engagement on fleeting targets or for sniper team protection. The SASW is expected to receive the C20 designation (small arms weapons are numbered sequentially as they come into service). The SASW is a new capability as we do not have a semi-automatic precision rifle with scope and suppressor in service within the Canadian Army.”

I don't see how they can have a "delivery date" if they are still in the "planning phase" with no spec and RFP, and unicorns will be riding on a rainbow if they can issue a RFP, finish the trial and have a factory delivering stuff in 10 months, unless this is a super urgent purchase of an off-the-shelf-item.

If they weight it in Sig's favor then its already ready....but hey, CAF procurement never stacks the deck. Do they? ;)
