I have written a review right after the match but I have deleted it - becasue there are some jargons there I figured I should just leave them out. :p

The June match at Connaught was very well attended - I have never ever seen so many civilian competitions. There were over 30 people showing up. Many people were from Quebec. It was almost like a PQ rifle association transplanted to Ontario. Multi-cam seemed to be the fashion......Marpat and woodland are out. So all the trend followers take note!

And rarely - there was no wind at Connaught! :dancingbanana:

The new 1 to 4 matches create some issues for civies - now everyone was carrying up to 10 mags around. You have to have a functional set of load bearing carrier. Many civilians shot with their backpacks on, because the way the relays worked. No one tried to be PC and put their magazines into the pockets anymore.

The new 1 to 4 match is less physical intensive than the old match. The super rundown is gone, and there are more time to settle down after the run. However, some of the stages are super long. Doing the butt work made baby jesus cry. There are lots of repetitions - those 20 rounds stages were really testing endurance sometimes.

Since this whole thing is based on advanced application, there aren't any 4ft frames for sighters. If the rounds are off ( bad zeroing or wind), you might be pumping rounds into air for the entire match.

Some of the timings for Match 2 were kinda slow - too much time to shoot at close range at 15 yards . I literally had time to put my reticle on the target for a second, adjusted and fired, watched where I hit, and fired again. IMHO, this is not good-training scar. At 15 yards, it only needs 2 seconds the most to fire 2 shots. Also, ORA did not have barricades, so that created some slack in timing where stages were supposed to be shot on alternate sides of barricades. Instead, we just shot it kneeling or standing. So the ORA vesion of the Match 2 is slightly watered down due to the lack of barricades (and people complaining going down on their knees 10 times)

Overall, the new 1-4 match is less physical intensive, but it is harder because it runs faster. The pace is faster and it is less dragging from the perspective of keeping interest. Your OODA loops needs to go 3X speed. You have to organize the kits, move, do time appreciation, read the environment and shoot. In the old matches, there was enough time to do one thing at a time. Now, you have to manage everything at the same time. There were times I said to myself - have you even looked at the wind? Thank god there had been no wind that day!

Becasue of the faster pace, the butt and the firing points really have to work together. The butt officer (or ButtMaster TM) really has to keep his gig tight. Hungry and TimK were doing a good job - and first time ever I heard TimK yelling at Hungry. :dancingbanana::nest:

I cannot wait til we see some wind gushing at Connaught in this new match. we are going to hear lots of cursing and f-words - :p

Just my short review.

Good review,
I heard TimK yelling at Hungry.
hey hey epic.

Those arti-sims, barbwire, grenades and shooting over our heads was also very distracting.... but not as much motivation as Hungry screaming in the butts.;)

With regards to the Gucci kit, those yellow and white hard hats in the butts were not in style with the Cadpat, next time I will wear a lumber jack red & black shirt with jumper pants :D

Haven't had a chance to shoot the new course of fire yet, but I was pleased to see that the rundown component is reduced. 100m is no problem, but Match 12 is a bit of an ordeal for me.

Managed a 47-3 in it at NSCC, but it was a struggle. I'm 64 and have had a quadruple bypass. It isn't getting any easier.
I am going to have to get to one of the ORA 1-4 Matches, give them a try. Bought a sack of LARs. Shooting schedule this summer is really busy.

Great match, quite different then last years. More dynamic for sure but "marksmanship" takes a beating.

Great review, sums up the weekend.

There was also a nice array of firearms.

Thanks Greentips for the review, you're right about the hard work in the butts, Hungry had us working dbl time (just kidding).

Where are the pictures of this great event......:D

In his e-mail Tim said it'd be 2-3 weeks to get the pictures developed.

The ButtMaster speaks:

My voice is starting to recover. After a few commands, the girlie part of my manhood showed and screeched! My apologies for the offensively shrill voice commands. I was sunbaked and brainfried to boot!

It's a very intense workout both on the range and in the butts! Yeah, we would love to have barricades et al, but your fees would really take a beating. Read: more $$$

We work with what we've got and that is the body of volun(told)teers / shooters at the match. For you CF pers reading this... I'm passing out my condolences for the schmozzle you dudes are gonna get this Sept at CFSAC. Don't take this the wrong way; the butt party is gonna be a jzgfornication unless yer Chief Butts O has lots of experience running the butts prior! ;) You shooters are gonna have a lot of fun watching mistakes happen and reshoots result. Glad I'm back in the classroom going bananas trying to edumacate my high school kids. I cannot believe I actually said that.

Anyways, it's new, it's here and not much we can do, but anticipate how to provide a quality trg programme for the shooters both civvie and military pers. :D

Thoughts? Feedback from the shooters who I had to apologize for screaming at??

Barney

I will now be double ear plugging in the butts... I can't hear you, dah dah dah.

It was all good and we got her done!

thanks to Tim and Hungry....oh what happenned to the saturday night pizza party??

Was great to have so many new shooters, all seemed to have a great time and learning experience (mud and muzzles don't mix, make sure colapsable stocks stay locked when firing a large caliber rifle and have spare mags, good load carrying setup....)

Like Alex wrote, lots of great rifles and gear, many varieties of types, calibers and optics. Learning what works and what not so much is what it's all about.

Great review, thanks. Hubby just ordered me a Norc M4 for my birthday so as soon as it actually *gets* here, I'll be raring to try these matches. Thank god for clinics beforehand.

Guilty for sporting the multicam

TimK made us carry packs and wear pistols (empty of course) :). I was shooting the first relay and got poured on hard with rain. Notice how wet MC works well with the wet grass.

Thanks for the beer shortandlong. Fortunately more gnomes appeared bearing gifts of the malty kind when it ran out.

Furet and AlexD, I got picks for you guys. I'll send them to you as soon as PhilK edits the lot.

Having only done this even once before last year, the new changes are great. This competion really pushes you, your rifle/carbine and your gear. The facilities are great, the shooters are great. Tim and Barney, you guys put on a hell of a show. There is very little down time and thats what I enjoy at these events, you only get enough time to load mags, and then your busy with something. The work and organization you guys do is amazing.

Ugh! Mount levers fell off. Gotta buy new good ones. What did I expect for 25 bucks and they were Burris?

Other than equipment failure, now I know what shooting skills to work on for the next match. I love those sanp and movers!!!
