CFSC in Edmonton/Calgary in August

Greetings all,

I am in a fairly unique situation, so I was hoping someone could shed some light here. Up until two years ago I lived exclusively in Canada, but now I am going to school on the opposite side of the Atlantic. I have taken the firearms courses for both Ireland and England, but I don't have a license in Canada (despite doing the majority of shooting here). I'll be back for a while this summer; in Calgary from July 30-Aug 5, then in Edmonton from Aug 22-26, so I was hoping to be able to do a one-day CFSC course during that time. If anybody could point me in the direction of someone who does the course in these cities at these times that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Both The Shooting Edge (Cal) & Wild West Shooting Center (Edm) offer the course(s).

Or there's a few licensed instructors on here that can let you take it privately. Walter Hornsby (sp?) comes to mind...

:)

I hadn't thought of the private course option. I have a good working knowledge of firearms, but I'd want to brush up before taking the exams. So if anyone out there knows someone who could maybe give a private refresher type course that would be a helpful alternative to sitting the regular class.

if you've got a half-assed working knowledge and SOME common sense, you should just challenge - it's DEAD simple ; and expect to get at least a 90% if you READ THE QUESTIONS THOROUGHLY, and know your ACTS and PROVE- or as we used to call it "safe gun handling"- just watch out for the "barrel obstruction check"

Thanks for the heads up. I had been originally thinking of just challenging it and, by the sounds of it, that seems like a good plan. For the practical bit, when you're doing barrel obstricuction, what do they do for that, that is, can you just bring in a bore light and use that in the test, or would that not fly?

that's the stupid one where they make you look down the barrel- personally, i'm uncomfortable looking down the barrel of any gun. be it action open or not- so i carried a small 22 caliber rod and slipped it down the barrel from the muzzle at the appropriate time- but every examiner is different, and may insist that you look down the muzzle to prove it- by all that's holy, it's WRONG, but that's the way it is in the course
you see it VIOLATES 2 GOLDEN RULES: 1) ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION- how can you do thatwhen you're staring down the barrel?
2) NEVER POINT AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT WISH TO SEE DESTROYED- unless you have a suicide bend , etc-
those are the reasons it's STUPID
