Looking to challenge the exam. I have spent several years in army cadets, and also shooting with my grandfather, so I know my way around a long arm. What kind of questions do they ask and what do i need to know?

Also if you are an instructor in the Barrie, ON area and will let me challenge the exam as soon as possible, please inbox me.

thanks for the speedy reply avalonthas. I am already doing the course for restricted in september, but I am working full time right now and that includes weekends. I want to get moving on my non restricted so that I can be ready for hunting this fall. I do hope to learn more of the fine print regulations while taking the restricted

Read the book, go on youtube to watch the training video for the course, that would be enough to easily pass if you have had lots of time handling firearms before. Also even good to go to a range and handle a few of the guns to get the feel for handling handguns

I never had to take the NR course (Hunter's safety beat the deadline by a few months) but took the day course for restricted. It's pretty basic stuff, I would say if you grabbed the reading material and spent a little time going through it you'd pass. Need to knows are things like action types, ammo identification, basic safety (don't point guns at people, put it down before jumping the fence, etc...) and transport regs. If you're confident with this stuff then giver, if not, take the day course verbal explanations can be a good thing.

I'm guessing you may not have much experience with shotguns or handguns...read the two books (or is it just one nowdays? A few years ago it was one for PAL, and another for RPAL), learn it, know it.

There's a multiple choice test with lots of questions, 100 I think, and also there's a practical, where you will have to demonstrate safe handling, loading, unloading and use of many different examples of firearms. When I did mine, I had to show competence with:

-bolt action hunting rifle (Savage .300 win mag?)
-lever action rifle (a Winchester style rifle)
-Mossberg pump 12gauge model 500
-double action revolver (Ruger GP-100)
-single action revolver (Colt single action army)
-double action automatic handgun (CZ-75)
-single action automatic handgun (Colt Gold Cup 1911)

But the books are also interesting from the point of view of learning about guns you maybe aren't aware of much, for instance there's a section dealing with the principles of shotgun patterns and chokes. Or an entire section dedicated to black powder firearms like muzzle loaded flintlocks and caplocks. It's worth the read!

If you challenge the test and for some stupid reason move to Quebec you have to take the course anyways as they do no allow you to hunt with the test alone. I had my RPAL and had to sit thru the course again as they say I didn't understand the course by just passing the test.

Its true, in QC you have to take the course in order to be able to pass the hunting course....
