This is a wierd one. Bought a rifle with custom barrel. Took it to the range and fired factory 223 ammo through it. When looking at fired brass I see what I thought was a grove around the entire casing.
In fact it is actually a step down from .365 to .360 in diameter. As if the chamber was drilled at .360 then drilled again at .365 but only 3/4 of the way. When I bore-scope it you can clearly see the demarcation between the 2 measurements. Any thoughts?

Yes. I am going to get it redone but long waiting list. Seems to fire OK. No overpressure signs or anything like that.

It sounds like a little screw up when it was chambered... too large of a drill was used and the reamer could not clean that up...
Or maybe the drill was just run a little too far in, which left the artifact after the chambering reamer. Regardless, the smith should have test fired the thing and that would have shown the defect.

Here is a pic of case.

If a barrel were set back, and the chamber recut - and the reamer used didn't entirely clean up the original chamber, cases could look like that. Any sign of that?
A remedy would be to set the barrel back, and clean up the chamber. Wouldn't take more than 3/8"- 1/2". The shank would have to be redone, picking up the threads.

I think that the important measure is if it shoots well.
While the work wasn't properly done, if it meets the level of accuracy you need, redoing it won't get you further ahead.

Looking at the fired cases, I doubt that there is a problem shooting the rifle, or in reloading the cases.

I have continued to fire rifle without any issues. Accurate enough. I think I will let it be for now. maybe have a gunsmith fix it up if needed at another time. Thanks for all the input.
