Hi guys,

Got my first SKS (one of Marstar's current Chinese offerings) and I haven't been able to figure out something very basic.

When I was cleaning it I quickly realized that the locked-back bolt could not be released to go back into battery unless the magazine was unlatched and lowered. Fair enough.

But after you've carefully pushed-down five rounds into the secured magazine, how to you "release" the bolt to strip-off the top cartridge and go into battery.

(And yes, I did unthinkingly unlatch the magazine and watched all five cartridges plop into the snow:)

You can unlatch the magazine while still holding it kinda shut with an adjoining finger while you release the bolt with the other hand, but that seems awfully half-assed and busy and awkward.

Many thanks for the the advice ... probably just pointing-out the obvious.

mmmm dont just let it go with your finger in there. Slide the bolt forward over the follower then pull your finger out :) There is a tab on the back of the follower that lifts the bolt catch. Once it is lowered, the force of the recoil spring is the only thing holding it in place. Boomer49, youre gonna love that SKS!

What he said. Also, make sure you pull it back and let it go under its own force, don't pull it back and hold it, and slowly guide it forward. LET IT FLY.:sniper:

If you look at the bottom front of the bolt there is a little (.5" wide?) flat bar that blocks the bolt from coming forward.
The follower in the magazine holds it up, blocking the bolt.
Either putting round into the magazine or by pushing the follower down a bit will allow the flat bar to fall.
Only thing is that it does not "fall" as the pressure from the bolt+carrier is against it, requiring you to pull the bolt carrier back slightly taking the pressure off the flat bar, allowing it to fall, allowing the bolt and carrier to slam forward.

Oh boy...

Reading about SKS slamfires is just one of the reasons why I never load a gun in the bedroom. Make sure your closing the bolt somewhere safe. I'm not sure they make 7.62*39 snap caps.

This is why I hate the SKS, you have to be a rocket scientist to use it. They really need to make this gun easier to shoot.

I sold my SKS after I tried for 3 weeks to figure out which end the bullets came out.

absolutely , especially with commercial ammo . i buy dummy 7.62x39 round from a person that reloads.
