is there a way to make some of the semi auto rifles into a straight pull action and avoid the govt ridiculousness? thanks

Nope. Lots of guns you can just pull the gas piston and it won't cycle itself. Not going to mean a damn thing in the eyes of the feds though.

Just look at how they treat converted automatics...

It won't matter, it will still be a variant.

No one knows how the final definition would be, but the C-21 definition of "Capable of Semi-automatic fire" does a lot of heavy lifting to say a firearm that was one way, can't be converted to not be "capable of" especially from the R v Hasselwander "capable of" precedent definition.
